  • South Shields pier and the Groin 13/10/13.

Went down to South Shields pier lads in the hope of catching some Cod with the big seas. 12pm onto S/S pier. Few lads all before the gate and all struggling. Decided to climb round the gate and trek to the end. Weather was bit rough. Set up and after 3 casts made my way back to gate. Nothing at all doing so made the decision to try deep water on the falling tide at the Groin. Bit apprehensive but followed Bob C advice and long cast into channel as tide was going out was fine-not one snag or lost weight. Only fish I caught was this little fella.

Some Ryhope lads were on in a comp and fresh peeler was nailing the codling. Seen a few come up but all small.
Went home feeling bit fed up. My blacks, squid, mackeral and rag (kindly given to me some young lads) were all really useless to get a codling.
Seems the only way forwards on this day was crab.
    Mick.
Personal best, 12.5lb Tope Scotland. 22/05/2012.

Better than nowt Mick and as already said, at least you were out.

I was down on Saturday, fishing right next to the gate from about 10ish till about 3pm and had a couple of good knocks but once again couldn't connect. I did manage to catch a crab like

Loads of folk going around the gate and tales of the odd fish, from folk coming back off but never saw a fish, dead or alive.

I was planning another trip down to Shields today, but after being woken by the rain lashing on the window this morning, decided to stay home and save the fuel cost

Back to work tomorrow, so it'll be next Sunday at the earliest for me

          cheers
