Me and my mate are coming to Whitby on Friday for a good 24 hour fishing trip, we are hoping to fish off the pier there as my mate has a back problem and cant walk that far.
Was wondering (as we are very new to fishing) if there are anyone out there that could give me a few pointers on where about on the pier to fish also what baits to use, rigs e.t.c and if someone can recomend a decent bait shop and location too.

If anyone is going to be out and about and is willing to teach a couple of newbie fishermen how to go on then i am sure as i work for a brewery that i could provide a couple of cases of beer for your trouble.

i know it sounds like a bribe but if it works then thats great!!!
please e-mail me for my phone number

    Cheers

    Pete

After driving up from the midlands we arrived at Whitby Angling Supplies at about2:30, bought loads of bait and rigs (dead cheap too) headed off for the pier, got there at 3:15 to find only one other on the Pier fishing off the end, a guy from Hartlepool on holiday, asked how he fared and was told only small stuff caught so far.
I set up 2 rods, one baited with Lug tipped with maccy and cast out towards sandsend about 100 yards, the other rod i baited up with Squid cast towards sandsend about 50 yards.
At this point Mike came on the pier to say hello and bought some bait and sinkers, really nice to have met you Mike.
We started off slow getting small Rocklins and small codling, after about an hour i had my first ever sizable catch that i could take home which was a 2-1/2 pound Coalie.
At about 6 ish i think, Pigeon Ian and Cod master arrived along with Tom and some others that i cant remember there names ....sorry chaps!!!
after a quick natter we got back into fishing and Ian caught the HM Customs ship but he failed to land it.!!
I caught a big Whiting, another for the freezer and on it went catching small codlings and rocklings, we heard a shout as i think it was Codmaster who caught a doggie.
And now i come to the exciting part, i got stuck into a really big fish and everyone was excited, i my self nearlly peed my self with excitment, heart pumping, Ian ran down stairs to "handline it" but came back up, big debate followed and after 15 minutes Ian said it was snag NOT a fish, some of us was doubtfull as the "snag" kept moving left and then right, and after bowing down to Ians experience we decided he was right and as i pulled the snag came lose to find that i had in fact got snagged on line that someone had lost earlier, but i did gain another rig and sinker.
After saying goodbye to the lads we settled down to fish thru the night at about midnight 4 more people came on the Pier and fished at the end casting towards the east pier but with a masive distant cast, at about 1 am he bought in a 5lb cod and went home!!!! i had fished 9 hours there and only had whiting and a coalie, he came for 1 hour and took home a 5lb Cod!!!
Carried on fishing untill 11 am this morning and only caught small stuff, started to rain and decided to give up and go and eat breakfast before the 3 hour drive home.
Just want to say that all the people that came down and fished the pier were brilliant in giving advice and support and we took home a lot more knowledge, thanks to Ian, Codmaster and the rest of the lads, next time it will be Streetly pier for sure.
My report isnt quite finished but i will leave the rest of the details about filleting the fish with a bread knife for another day!!!!
needless to say my wife has put me in the dog house, even tho i did bring her back a "Whitby" T-Towel

                            Cheers
