After much gnashing of teeth from Lynn I got my way and an afternoon on the lochs. With a late high tide today we caught the 1220 boat to Dunoon and the bus to Blairmore. With the tide still low I got a coffee and sat outside the cafe scouring the pier for any sign of the seal while Lynn rummaged around the church charity shop! The weather was lovely as forecast and the seal appeared to be absent, so after half an hour we hit the pier. Got the gear organised, rod set up with spinner when I noticed Lynn giggling. Yup the seal had bobbed up and was staring at us a mere 10 yards off the pier!
Total pain in the arse, so we upped sticks and headed for Strone. Got there and the water was still very shallow around the small pier, so took a few photos.
Got set up for a second time while Lynn made a few calls.
Amazingly I got 2 decent sized mackerel in the first two casts. Then it went quiet as quickly as it had been fishing. As I had taken a bait rod with me too, I filleted one of the mackerel and set up the bait rod just to see what might be about. Once set up I turned round and the mackerel had gone!? A seagull on the railings looked suitably pleased with itself!
Filleted the other mackerel and cast out.
A few rattles from the off which never seemed to develop but the bait kept disappearing, crabs? About the fifth cast and retrieve I noticed that there was something on my hook, the smallest "cod" I think I have ever seen, foul hooked and about 4 inches tops! As it was my first "cod" on the Clyde for over 30 years I wanted to capture the moment, but Lynn had it off the hook and back in the water before I could blink!
Cast out again and went back to the spinning, but it was still quiet, so took some more photos!
The pier was getting a bit busy, so I thought I better get back to the fishing or lose my spot.
After about 15 minutes the mackerel came back, not in huge numbers but they were of a decent size.
All in all a pretty good day was had and just before we retired to the pub across the road, the sea equivalent of "whacky races" unfolded before our eyes!??
No clue what they were!?
