  • newbiggin bay-high water shot thurs.

fished the bay yesterday, high water was around five so got to the spot an hour before, a little late maybe but I only looked at the bay an hour earlier-good swell running in and thumping the sea defences, first hoy come to nowt and the heavens opened up above me,baited up with agood helping of frozen crab/blowlug and whacked it out a massive 40 yards set the rod in the rest-hadn't finished drying my hands when bish-bosh canny cod bite, now was the tester to get it in safely over the rocks on the defences with a good surf running, managed to keep it's head and timed it on top of good breaker and lifted it over the rocks, champion
didn't have camera with me so this is the fish gutted when I got home (apologies about the quality)
next hoy was with the same bait and a ten minute wait ended with a slackliner, reeling like a maniac to catch up with whatever was on I soon realised that I was attached to something big-and it would've of easily beaten my pb shore cod of 8 lbs 7oz...after dragging this fish towards the rocks I was getting worried as I couldn't get it as high in the water as I wanted to clear the boulders and this is where the story ends as it got stuck on the front of the defences, with loads of slack line and heave-ho, and slack again it mustv'e had enough and twang!!! off it swims to fight another day.
had another couple of hoys but got nowt so headed back up home still thinking of what mightv'e been, nevermind there's always tomorrow..rgf

Nice one mate , you should try a scuba outfit next time as it'll save you losing the fish lol ,been there mate it's so frustrating ,sometimes ( I'm sure you've tried this ) I'll leave slack line for about 5 or 6 minutes to see if the fish swims out of the snag ...........sometimes you win sometimes not .
I find this works on the top of the cliffs at Newbiggen ,well mostly
You can take the lad out of Walker but .......

not too worried about losing fish as with everyone else I lose me fair share, the only worry is standing holding or staring at me rod tip for hours, hoying very generous lumps of bait at the fish and nowt happening-you start thinking about how many fish are left in the sea/start questioning my angling ability....looking through my diary it is evident that I have caught more fish by changing one thing and that is not to have any preconceived ideas about where to fish-getting out there and looking at the way the sea's running, what looks good too me seems to get me more fish but then again cos I've picked the spot it gives me more confidence and that it's self is crucial in angling....methinks.rgf

Agree mate shame about the fish though have seen many a fish hung up there and have hung a few up my self its timing it up the steps with the swell and the fish moving, dark etc not easy.
last year for the prom as its all changing next year

Aye Paul,I heard that work will start at the back end of 2007,but i'm not sure what is gonna happen-there's talk of like an offshore breakwater thingy and I don't know if this will be linked to the land or is it a marina type developement?,be interesting to see though and it'll probably spoil the fishing there just when the prom has come back on song, some canny bags there so far..rgf

the newbiggin lads are quick to snaffle any lost gear as the tide recedes, but buried underneath the sand will be loads of old bashed leads...where did I putthat metal detector?
