  • Whitby West Pier 18/11/06

Well, another funny sesion. We were meant to be uptiding today but it got cancelled, so the gear went in the car and we headed up to Whitby.

Arrive at low water (about 9pm) and stright into plenty of bites resulting in a decent whiting and coalfish to mackerel. Then went very quiet but was determined stuck it out till high water. One of my mates hooked a 2 1/2lb codling at about 12 midnight - looked like a whiting bite!

At about 2.30am he wound in to find a 1 1/2lb codling hooked. With this I though it was time to get a good bait out. 6 medium sized peelers and a big squid head went on to a pennel rig and was lobbed out.

Within 5 minutes the tip was thunking and I was into a half decent cod. I was just pulling it up to the drop net when disaster struck - the 30lb hooklength snapped! The fish looked around 5-6lb but I'm really kicking myself. We had been plagued by crabs for most of the night and I'd forgot to check my hooklenth for damage. Lesson learnt!

The sea was flat and most peopled had vanished by about 1am.
