Just had a week at the Mull with the wife and kids. Managed to get a few early moring sessions, so here goes the report...

After battling through torrential rain, we arrived at our cottage in Sandhead, greeted by this sight outside our front door....

A fantastic base for fishing, literally 40 yds from the beach.

    Sunday

Up just before dawn for my first ever plugging session for Bass. Found, what I thought, looked like good bass ground and had a go....

After about an hour I got a Bass of about 3lb, but lost the bugger at my feet, but the best was to come. 2 casts later, I was watching my plug back when I seen a spikey looking fin following it. Surprising myself, I kept calm, getting the plug within 5 yards of me, when the fish must of clocked me. With a big flash of silver and thrash of its massive tail, it was last seen powering towards Whithorn. I would have said it was around the 6lb mark by the previous fish. I carried on for another hour, but as soon as daylight proper came, there was nothing.

To anyone who's never tried plugging, try it - its mesmerising fishing.

    Monday

Tried my favouriite Pollack mark to the south of Port Logan. Fish were few and far between. Tried floatfished and spun sandeel, together with floatfished long strips of mackerel. One fish I did get was a personal best Pollack which I guess was over 5lbs....

Had 3 or 4 others around the 2-3lb mark as well, but the wind started to get up, so called it a day.

    The mark I fish...

    Same place, different view...

A place on the list for a future visit...

    Tuesday

    Lie in!

    Wednesday

During a trip to the Mull of Galloway lighthouse the day before, I'd found the path down to Lagvag point, so decided to give it a go. Arrived just on low water and used the same bait/tactics as Port Logan. Ended up with half a dozen Pollack to 3lb. It was fantastic watching the tides turn this way and that, but it was murder for trotting your float! A couple of pics...

    My first Lagvag Pollack

Lagavg Point. Only thing wrong with it is the amount of crap left by people , as you can see in the pool in the middle of this pic - lazy b***tards

    Tide off the point

    Thursday

Took Emma fishing on another point at Port Logan. Never got a thing, again the breeze in our face didn't help matters, but she still loved the climbing down the rocks part

    Friday

Another trip to my Mark at Port Logan. Another 5 Pollack up to 3lb, but had to come away just as the fish were coming on (Wish I was bloody single ).

    Port Logan

Some of the easier to get to marks...

In between the fishing, we went to Portpatrick and the kids loved the shoal of mullet in the harbour. We then had a walk up to Dunskey castle - Laura's still recovering

    Dunskey castle

If anyone is taking their kids up to SW Scotland, I'd recommend the creams of galloway farm. The kids will love it. Its got all sorts of activities and is a brilliant day out. Here's their site...

So there you go, another fantastic week. Two unusual things for me though. One, I never got one mackerel during the week and two, I never got a Pollack on sandeel, floatfished or spun. Plugging for Bass is fantastic though, I'd recommend it to anyone. I would have tried more but as the tides progressed during the week, the ideal time was too late in the day. The site of that fin following the plug will be etched in my head forever - fantastic stuff.
