Me and ZIPPIE had a blast up to Beadnell today with a few dozen crab and heavy ground gear and a telescopic for spinning if I got bored. We even had a map to tell us where to go from ZIPPIE's mate who had a caravan up there.

Started off at the front of the harbour on a rock point. Zippie caught a red rock codling about a pound on his first cast. Stayed there for an hour and a half or so and tried a few casts with my spinning gear (me still blanking).

Went to a different rock point and chucked out our baited up traces. Got bored again so tried the spinning gear again. Got stuck on kelp straight away (as I thought) but then the kelp dove for the bottom !!!!!.....where it wrapped itself around a kelp stalk or something. Thinking this would be the one and only oportunity to catch something on the spinning gear I tried to coax it out giving free line which it would take but not unwrap itself so snapped off.

Put the fixed spool on loaded with braid and had another chuck. BANG...straight on and diving away for the kelp again. I said 'Oh dear me this fish appears to be rather lively' or something like that. After a minute or two a nice 3lb Pollock landed. With ZIPPIE elbowing me out the way shouting 'Me Me my turn'. I suspected he wanted a go.

BANG...another one a bit bigger landed after several 'Jolly go show's' from myself. My turn to elbow ZIPPIE out the way, BANG... straight into another one only a tad bigger than the first one's (4lb).

They went off the boil but I managed another 3lb'er half an hour or so later. Oh yes forgot to mention the red Codling ZIPPIE kept pulling in and a small wrasse. I managed 1 red'un but was well chuffed at the sport that the Pollock gave on a telescopic (9foot Shakespear Zenith about 8yrs old.....Yes I would recommend one if they still make them).

All in all a cracking day out and something to try again.
    Cheers Alan...
