had a days pleasure fishing ytdy started out at the walkway first three casts three codling 2 about 2lb one abit smaller then tide got to strong and the fish disappeared. had a wander round to the pier had a cast at the post got a double shot of undersize tommys first chuck then had to move cos the guys with the crab pots turned up to empty them was fishing next to a lad called "big fred" we both moved up towards the end. i went to the small wall as the tide started to ease. nothing first chuck second chuck had the classic drop back bite wound into it and everything went solid. after a bit of coaxing managed to get it moving it was obviously a fish as the tip was nodding constantly. it took me about 10-15mins to get the fish up and moving. it stayed deep right to the side i was convinced it had line or rubbish wrapped around it but when it surfaced next to the stone steps, it was huge one of the biggest cod ive ever seen. fred went down the steps with still a swell on no net or gaff i knew i would be lucky to get it and so it proved as soon as fred attempted to get the fish onto the steps the 35lb hook length parted in the middle. well you can imagine the rest!!!! i have had fish to 16lb from this coast and this was way bigger than that i can only guess but would say it was at least 20lb probably more. i hadnt realy planned to go to the pier and in light of recent catches hadnt expected anything like this so all the hundreds of pounds i have spent on rods, reels, etc my next purchase will be a dropnet. after the horse has bolted i suppose!!

Hard-lines mate!
I don't think I have ever seen anyone actually carrying a drop net,
It's one of those; I'll never need one scenario's, until what you have described above actually happens!
Keep it up!

Good report mate.
I don't know wether it's a good thing, or bad thing, that you saw the size of your fish.
You must be gutted.

Hard lines, I know the feeling after Newbiggin the other week. Only difference then was there was nearly £1500 riding on it.
Just noticed the number of posts

im glad i saw the fish and i suppose i had it beaten as it was lying on the surface about 6ft from fred. i had let all the fish go i had caught on the day and this fish had a huge gut on it and was probably full of roe so i hope it getting away results in plenty of baby cod!!! as you can see im trying to focus on the positives to stop myself crying!

good report m8t,
unlucky on the fish, i was told 1's never 2 grab the line as it puts all the presure on the snood. it happend 2 me at white rocks with a m8t's fish 20lb+ i did'nt grab the line but coaxed it arond the ledge, 2 inches away from guilling it & the snood snapped.
it was'nt my fish but i was just as gutted m8t, it did'nt swim awat either it just sank 2 the bottom out of sight

in hindsight i really dont know what we could have done, fred didnt really pull at the fish it was just as the large swell passed the fish dropped down 4-6ft there was nothing we could do. short of dragging it to the rubble but doubt that would have worked its about a third of a mile.

I've always been of the opinion if you lose a fish no matter how big or small it is and you know for certain in your mind that you have done nothing wrong then you weren't meant to land it, as simple as that. Don't dwell on it, at least you know what it's like to hook into a big fish, the majority of anglers will never know that feeling.
Just enjoy the experience.
