Fished the Heugh from 3.30p.p till 7.30p.m. Dug a bit of fresh lugworm at lunchtime so decided that with there being a bit of a Northerly roll on combined with a 5.1 metre tide it might be worth a bash. Started of slowly at first with a few size whiting, then an hour before high water rod almost gets pulled out of rod stand, lifted into a fish which put up a great scrap on my 15lb line. Ten minutes later managed to coax it to the steps before gilling it. Weighed it on the pier 14lb 11oz of prime cod, lovely markings and looked full of roe. In a conservationist moment i decided to return it tol ay its eggs. Had one other cod of 4lb also returned from the barrier as well as a few whiting. All in all a great days fishing in what has been a poor season overall and ended the season with my P.B cod
All the fish were caught on fresh black lug and frozen crab. There was also one other excellent cod caught of 10lb 10oz by a local angler. There were probably about forty rods on the pier but only threee cod caught, with whiting making up the numbers.

    Many thanks guys,
I just felt at the time of returning the fish she may have a chance to make it and hopefully re-populate our already dwindling cod stocks. Sadly though that is if it steers clear of nets, trawlers etc. It was my choice at the time and i can understand any angler keeping such a fine fish, that is fine and i would say well done. However as i get older or maybe softer i'm beginning to see that fishing really is becoming about the sport for me and not just the kill. To be quite honest i get great satisfaction from a great scrap with the fish and then returning it, anyway just my thoughts and thanks once again chaps.
Alan name is John Wilson fish caught on the Heugh at Hartlepool, weighed 14lb 11oz the other angler was called Gus, unfortunately don't know his surname but i think he fishes for the King Oswy club his fish weighed 10lb 10oz. Cheers.
