Fished my favoutite mark on Roker in a lovely falling sea for 5 hours yesterday evening. Result, 1 codling just over a pound and 5 whiting. Missed one cracking bite which nearly took the rod out of my hands Tried crab, lug and fresh blacks.
I seen 3 codling on the whole of the pier, and they were at the barrier, best about 6lb. Pretty poor given the sea, but it seems its the same everywhere. My mate fished the Heugh over high water on the morning and never seen a codling. He said there were plenty of goodsize whiting up to 1.5lbs though.

theres huge shoals of sprat and sandeel offshore, i think the cod must be pre occupied feeding on them. the whitings i caught last week were full of sandeels about 6" long.

As already said, better than nowt Davy.
In view of what Micky has said about sandeel/sprats has anyone tried using sandeel for bait recently. Maybe thats why we're not getting any cod ---- using the wrong bait. Next time out I'm taking some frozen stuff with me.
