Well thought it is about time to take the plunge and write my first catch report I do all my fishing in Scotland so don't know how relevant it is to you guys, so here goes:
Headed North yesterday (Sunday) with intentions of fishing Usan. Got to Arbroath where we got our first glimpse of a very angry looking sea. We knew then that Usan would be out of the question but I wanted to see what is was like for myself. Awesome is the only word that comes to mind, it was huge.........fishing would have been suicide. Had a quick look at Boddin on the way back to the main road, it was fishable but we thought we had a better chance further north.
Shelter was the goal now, so with that in mind we headed up to a mark just north of Bervie. A horseshoe bay similar to Bervie and Auchmithie beach, just a good bit smaller. Lasted an hour, our lines were getting dragged into snags within a minute or so. Fed up of losing gear we headed back to Boddin just as it was getting dark, the tide was much lower by now and the sea had settled to a massive roll.
We fished on the south side into the bay. First cast and I'm thinking of blanking....it seemed hopeless. The rod tips were bouncing with the rhythm of the waves. I reeled in after about fifteen minutes to change my bait - snagged.....I put pressure on the rod and to my total amazement it started to move. Not a big fish about a pound and a half but very welcome. Cast out my second bait, it was now dark and the fish came out to play. We lost far more than we could land but just to see that tell tale cod bite was great. I ended up with four codling, biggest was around 3lb, all returned. My mate had a bigger one around 4.5lb.
All in all a hard nights fishing, but at least the fish were there. Lost a load of gear fell on my ar*e a few times trying to pull for breaks but still good to get back to winter fishing. Out again next week......maybe a bit further north in search of the big one.

I had frozen black lug, frozen crab and mussel, killer bait deemed to be 2 worms tipped with a crab. It was really hard to tell what was bites and what was just the waves. Quite a few times we were reeling in to change bait and there was a fish on the end but most times they were well caught up even though we could still feel them....just have to pull and hope for the best.

Nice report fifer. Off to Scotland on Friday, staying at Ferryden for a week - Boddin 4 miles, Usan 2 miles so its nice to know that there is some fish up there. Looking at the forecast it seems there will be a big high hanging over that area which is not what we want but there are plenty of deep water marks we can try. Would prefer to fish in the kelp (got more weights than sense) but without a bit of sea on it may prove fruitless. Will report when I get back.

Hi Scott - We stay in the Esk Hotel (the name flatters it a bit). Been going up there for the past 6 years. Used to stay in a holiday cottage but they all seem to have been sold now. The Esk is extremely friendly, very central to most marks and you can wear your waders in the bedroom (if you are that way inclined). One tip - don't get into a round with the natives on a Saturday night - you'll never get fished on the Sunday until pm!
