Finally I managed a trip out shore fishing. Went to the beach and had a look about, the problem here is theres loads of people on the beaches, be it surfing, swimming or just bathing, though that was about to change! I had a look up and down the place, looking for the right spot in the surf, (theres lots of surf here, it never goes away). As I was looking, a guy came down and started fishing in front of me, I watched for a bit, he tried for 20 mins and came back up of the beach. He was struggling to find bait to catch croaker, which he would then use for sharks. Excellent, I tagged along! We moved up the beach about 200 yards to the right, and met up with his other mate.
These guys were using really light tackle ( 8ft spinning rods, 6 lb line, 1 oz lead and size8 hooks baited with small mussels). Undeterred, I had some mackerel in my cooler, which I caught on Sunday from my cousins boat and proceeded to pendulum a clipped down rig carrying a half fillet of mackerel on a pennel rig, to the edge of the surf about 120 yards. The bathers soon legged it!
First cast I got broken free by the strands of weed that were present.
Second cast I got a slack line, I thought more weed, but this time it was a little guitar fish about 7 lbs. Excellent. Though I was now starting to question the sensibility of using 18lb mainline!
Third cast, Another slack line, a little stingray 4lb.
Fouth cast, a nod-nod-nod bite. (and I was thinking dogfish!) turned out to be a little leopard shark 2.5lb.
Fifth cast a bat ray 4lb
Sixth cast another stingray 4lb
Seventh cast. another bat ray 4lb which gave a nice run when it picked up the bait!
Not a bad set of results for 2.5 hours fishing! And for a first trip!6fish/7casts/4 species!
So what else was caught roundabout? Well there was a total of 8 other anglers fishing next to me in the end, Using boat rods! They were wading up to their neck in the water and then casting out! Funny thing was I was still casting further! still laughing about it now! They managed between them a grand total of 2 croaker . small almost trout like things about 1/2lb and a small halibut (undersize at only 12"). The halibut have to be 22" before your allowed to take them.
So there you have it guys. My only wish is that the fish were a bit bigger! but apparently they are when you fish into darkness. I'll give that a try sometime and also try groundbating like Gogs has told me to (south African style).
The fish I caught were all small apparently, the guys tell me the biggest they have seem the fish are ;bat rays go to about 15lb, the leopards go to about 6-7feet long, the guitars seem to go to about 15lb and the stingrays go to about 9lb.
Well all in all a good trip report, hopefully i canl do better next time!
