I Walked on to Roker pier about 5o'clock, saw a couple of lads I know saying the macki had been off for a couple of hours, so had a bit of banter, and then someone pulled in a double shot of macki, so decided to join the masses for a bash, and very soon it was standing room only on the round end, it was on and off for a few hours, ended up with 19 macki in the bag, all large.
Had a load of "herring" fall off coming up the wall, and was trying to get one for the hunt, finally brought one in, but alas it was foul hooked through its eye...
It had looked like the macki had gone off for the night, light was failing, and only "herring" coming in, then bang, I get a massive ton weight to drag in, 2 very good size macki, and a upper jaw hooked large "herring", so job done on that one.
Then I had a stonking surprise, felt something hit my daylites, but felt small, and a few times on the retrieve I thought it had come off, but when I finally got it to the top of the water I thought I had pulled in a kelpie cod, but no.... I pulled in a fish I thought I would never catch in my life....
A Grey Gurnard
Had a bit of a chuckle as I was dehooking it and trying to take a picture of it, as it was a croaking quacker, and very loud about it, it was making a fair old racket and everyone was like WTF is that, where is that coming from?"
Had my last bit of fun with it before releasing it, when I snuck up on my mate and made it quack in his ear, he nearly dropped his gear off the round end lol.
with the macki off for the night and even the "herring" failing to come in, I switched over to bait for the nights fishing, so set up both of my rods with 2 hook flappers To which I pulled in another target fish, a nice whiting, and a shore rockling joined the party as well.
Whiting
Shore Rockling
After that it was more of the same until about 2am, after which the flatties came in, a nice dab, but the rest were small flounders and dabs.
I decided to try my luck for a dogfish, so set one of my lines with a quarter tail of mackerel, alas no luck with that.
I fished on until about 5am, when the macki came back on, although in small numbers, I caught another double shot, and decided I had created enough of a dent in the Fisherman vs Fish War for the month....
Total tally for the night.
23 macki
5 herring
1 Grey Gurnard
11 Whiting
1 shore rockling
12 flounder
5 dab
So had a stonking night on roker pier.
