  • 1st Feb Heugh

The Heugh today an hour and a bit before high water.

Strong northerly swell, waves about 8 foot, winds 18mph NNW. Waves hitting the gate with spray to about 30 feet at times. Lad fishing the lower Heugh if you look closely.

He was a fully grown bloke aswell, not sure who he was trying to impress although he did stop well short of the biggest wave hits.

There was loads out today, most people I have seen around the Heugh for a while. A few photographers out taking pictures.
Middleton had easy 25 people fishing when I had a walk along 14:00

I looked at that today, I must have been there when you were setting up. I drove up to where you were and decided it was too risky then went to the middleton . Caught a couple of nice whiting and returned a small codling. I would say nearer forty on there today at it's peak. Seen a few 2=3lb getting pulled in on the end not a lot though. The whiting kept us busy. I left about 4pm and there was still about 20 on there. I noticed a little fishing boat on the inside of the heugh and it was there all the time I was there so I think he must have filled up. In fact you can just see it in your first pic. Looking closer at the picture, that isn't somebody right on the end right side bottom deck, it might be something else not sure.

Oh that's not me fishing, I was just pointing out the lad fishing. I didn't see anyone on the end of the Heugh, would be nuts to even try it today.

Yea I noticed the boat aswell, he was a bit too far to see any fish coming in. Reckon Middleton will do well tonight, Heugh will be a bit wild to fish for a few days looking at the forcast. I walked onto Middleton at about 15:00 you might have seen me, I seen a fish of about 4lb but very poor considering the number of people out.

Yea that was me, I moved round to Rowell street after taking a couple pics as was parked on yellows.

Had a look this morning, it's dropped off a bit...see what it's like at high water this afternoon and might go for an evening session off the end.

I am thinking of going today and fish in the shackles. can you get to the end alright or do you still have to shimmy round the side

I wouldn’t go round the side, I would climb over the top...the old shimmy round the side has been a no no for a while now - it used to be so easy didnt it

Walk along the upper ledge until you get to the gate and you will see next to the railings a small gap, big enough to fit your rods/tripod through…stick your gear through that hole as you will want both hands free to climb. Climb over the gate using the bolts as supports. If you have your box on your back be careful as when you’re setting yourself down its tight against the gate supports and it can knock you off balance.

Its not the easiest climb and its one of those where its harder getting back off than on so if you’re by yourself and not confident best to give it a miss.

I’m gonna have a look over at about 16:00 - if you need a hand let me know. If it looks ok I’ll come back with my rod for a session through the night but it was still too dangerous this morning…winds and swell are dropping so fingers crossed.
