Should I be looking for more waves than this? Longsands beach

All depends where you want to fish Steven. Looks OK for Tynemouth & Blyth, fishing sand marks. I'd probably want it a bit bigger for the rock marks

When I read about peoplewanting ruff seas I imagined the waves crashing over the piers and sea walls. When I posted the webcam link the sea seemed quite calm to me.

As John says Steven, it all depends where you want to fish. Rough, as is beauty, is in the eye of the beholder mate

It might be rough at one mark but at another it could be completely flat. It can also work the opposite way too. You can look at one mark and it may look calm, travel just a few miles and it can be unfishable.

A perfect example but not always. If there is a sea running and it is just possible to fish Blyth beach, 99 times out of 100 it will be too rough to fish the Alcan area.

Another, on a northerly the south end of Blyth beach at Cullercoats will be far too rough to fish. Try the north end of Whitley Bay at the small prom or the Boat house and conditions will probably be ok. As could the north end of Blyth beach between the pier and the pipe.

It took me a long time to work out different area's but after a while when you move from one mark to another you will find the same things mate. The best way to keep track is to start writing a diary

What I am wanting to do is get an idea from the camera as to how ruff ruff is and weather it is worth the 25 mile drive each way/

Check sites like magic seaweed & the link below. That will give you an idea of sea state. Anything over 5' (1.5M) will have a bit of swell running , over 10' (2.5 M) is a big sea & you need to look for more sheltered marks. As Jim has said you can nearly always find a spot that you can fish in any sea condition. You can always ask on here for an idea of where to fish if your unsure. (I wouldn't take mine with my current run though!)
