  • Durham Police SAC 5/8/12 River Aln Alnmouth

This was our 2nd "Awayday" of the summer and after recent good reports, was on the River Aln at the bend in the River upstream from the boats.
The Comp was to be fished from 1pm until 6pm fishing the flood, with anyfish to be recorded, and returned. Being all virgins to the area, we arrived to find that only a foot of water was present on what was a spring tide, but we all had hope with the sight of numerous Sea Trout rising.
The Comp started in lovely bright conditions, with the eight anglers present ( including lady member ) finding the going hard, and I don't think any angler had a bite for over two hours.
Once the tide began to run, and boy did it run, then the flounder started to feed.
Martin Willis started the ball rolling with a single and then a double shot of flounder before anyone had a fish, so he was counting his winnings ( to early ). MIck Dunn and Insanio moved upstream and found the fish feeding, resulting in Insanio taking six fish in six casts.
The weather soon changed and Thunder could be heard in the distance, unless it was Mr Woodcocks stomach from his chicken balti sarnies !!
Luckily we avoided the worst of the weather and the fishing was not affected. Mr Chadwick, although short of fish had a couple of 33cm flounder giving him a share of the longest fish prize.
The match referee (ME) scorer (ME) and time keeper (ME ) called time at the final whistle with the top anglers scores standing at Insanio 176cms and Ian Ainsley at 175cms, so could the man from Consett beat the man from the Coast, NO Mr Ainsley pulled out a 21cm fish to get his head in front and over the line. HE SHOOTS HE SCORES.
Overall not a bad day with a lovely location, but not as many fish as expected. Maybe it was the large tide, or wrong state of the tide. Most fish falling to Rag/Maki with the fish not interested in crab.!!
High lite of the day was watching about half a dozen Ben Ainslie's sailing up and down the Aln at a speed of no more than 1mph due to the lack of wind ( apart from Mr Woodcock's )

    FULL RESULTS.

    1st. Ian Ainsley 9 fish for 196cms
