DURHAM POLICE SAC Comp Silloth 17/5/14

Well, a few of us decided to make the few hours trek over to the West coast to fish a Comp on Silloth Prom after the recent reports of some nice Rays showing.
A few of the lads headed out at 0530 hrs to catch the low tide to collect a few crabs for bait for the Comp apart from Mick and Pete who both needed their beauty sleep and were frightened of braking a nail crabbing.
I informed the latter that we would meet them on the Prom to the RIGHT of the lifeboat station around 11am to fish the Comp, so where did I find them...on the Prom to the LEFT of the lifeboat station sitting in the back of Micks motor having a sneaky practice session before the off...the place was chocka and the large tide was ripping down the bend bringing with it loads of weed and problems with the lines next to them.
We ain't fishing here Mick I said, there's no room, the tide pull is crap, the weed is crap and you won't get much..all I got back was, SNOOZE YER LOOSE..!!! we staying here, coz its comfy in the motor.
So the rest of us moved to the original location onto the stepped prom to the right and at 11.15 we started the Comp.
Six Adults and a junior (including the two loaners) started the Comp with a large Spring tide and heavy onshore wind not helping, but conditions were far better at our location than there's.
The Comp was to be fished for five hours, on a total measure and release with two rods allowed, but with one rod at distance looking for a thorny or doggie and a second lighter rod close in for the Flatties,
First chuck produced a nice pair of Flounders for Ian Ainsley measuring 40cm and 30cm with the larger turning out to be the longest fish of the day, with the rest of the lads into fish slowly but surely.
Crab appeared to be the bait for the Flats with some nice Dabs making an appearance close in, but nothing showing on the distance rods with sandeel baits.
Luke Ainsley (jnr) although having not fished for over a year was soon back into it pulling out a few double shots and pushing the adults all the way.
Barry Johnson then got a cracking knock on his distance rod which produced a clean 39cm codling, and not the expected doggie.
As the tide reached its max, and started to ebb the bites were few and far between with a few flounder being landed.
Five hours later and at the end of the Comp and with scores tallied up, we waited with baited breath for the two loners to arrive back with there full scorecards and take today's Cash bounty prizes for longest total and longest fish, as they pulled up How did you do was the cry from Mick, we did ok...What about you two? ...well I've had an Eel and Petes had an Eel and a Dab......well there was only one reply I could give Mick....SNOOZE YER LOOSE MICK...ha ha

    RESULTS..

    1st Ian Ainsley. 14 fish for 491cms
2nd Luke Ainsley (jnr). 9 fish for 256cms
    3rd Barry Johnson 4 fish for 129cms
    4th Kev Woodcock 3 fish for 71cms
    5th Pete Chadwick 2 fish for 45cms
    6th Davey Robson. 1 fish for 34cms
7th Mick ( snooze yer loose, tail end Charlie ) Dunn 1 eel for 20pts.

A nice day out, something different and better than being in the house.
Thanks to all the lads making the effort and all fish returned to fight another day..

Hats off to Chut for getting into a cracking mark. We should have moved but I had seen reports and pics of big Thornbacks from the Prom where we were at and speaking to licks they backed this up. Mind I was also told by locals the best place for Flounders was the groins where Chut and rest of squad went to. Myself and Peter were using two rods. Same methods. One rod right out with fish baits looking for a ray. One closer in looking for smaller stuff. We had loads of underside fish each at least a dozen but with min size of 25 cm they did not count. If it was 18 cm we would have done ok. Still nothing ventured nothing gained. A nice Thornie would have been good for Peters species list. There was also some other top dollar anglers with us all from the NE. Big tide, wind and weed was hard work but I still enjoyed fishing a new spot.

No mate. The Groins where Chut went turned out canny. If we ever return I will fish there. I was disappointed no Thornies or dogfish. We had a massive tide as well 9.1 metres.
