  • Float fishing for mackeral?

    Hi,
Does anyone have an idea where I can catch mackeral on float gear around Sunderland?
I\'ve tried Roker Pier early in the morning, but it was packed with featherers, and there was nothing caught.
Anyone have any idea where else the mackeral come within range?
I was hoping to fish this weekend.
    Cheers for any help.

You can catch mackrel on the float from the warry at whitburn (you couldn\'t spin there for all the kelp). There are various points aloong the rocks of whitburn you can try but depending on what state the tide is it\'s hard to tell you exactly where. Most are best at high water for floating though, and you might be surprised by the odd pollock. It\'s not a greatly fished place for mackrel but living there I see the terns diving in as cloase as 20 yards from the waters edge (also heard a couple of locals float fish the warry). I can\'t guarantee you fish but you\'ll be free of all the p****d young\'uns chucking spinners all over.

Geoff, you can float fish on Roker from the barrier up to the neck end (The tide gets stronger the closer you get to the end). You can get Mackeral in the bay as well, as long as ther\'s no freshwater coming down (like now).

        Thanks very much guys!
I had heard today that you don\'t have to any where near the end of the pier to still catch, so thanks Davey. I will try a lot closer to the shore.
I also like the sound of Whitburn. I had hoped you could catch around there. What is the Warry, is it the rocks? I\'m fishing with my sister in law tommorrow so I\'ll stick to the pier but i would like to fish the rocks, maybe on Sunday. Thanks Mog.

          Geoff..

Personally float fishing for mackerell is the only way I ever fish for them. Of course you don\'t catch as many sa people using \"daylights\" or even spinners, but I find it far more rewarding catching the odd one on a float rather than scores on daylights.
As far as marks go try Blyth west pier EARLY MORNING, efore the crowds arive or the Beacons at Newbiggin.

Dunstanburgh point is also a good place & you might even catch a nice Pollack if your using float fished sand eel.

The only other mark I can reccommend is the Beacons at Newbiggin.

Anyway good luck...best way by far to fish for them mate

Geoff, The Warry is easy to get to during the daytime. Head for the entrance to Soutar Point light house. Turn right as soon as you go through the gate (see what time the gates shut, the time is posted on the entrance board) and follow the road until it runs out at a car park. Walk approx. 150 yards towards the North along the path on the cliff tops and you will see a small bay which is easy to walk down to and there is a large area of flat rock to its right. At high tide it is fairly deep water. Good luck and lets know if you catch owt.
A bad days fishing is better than a good day at work.

Too far own he coast no doubt but Whitby west pier is good for float fiahing and the majority come from the end nearest the shore. Float fishing often outfishes any other method especially as the summer progresses. Personally I think braid is a must as it allows direct contact which gives more hook ups. What do others think ? braid or mono ?
