  • Fishing at Chesil Beach

As promised, I said I would keep you informed of the shore fishing in my part of the world.

Got To Chesil Beach at Abbottsbury (Dorset) at 05:30 this morning with a high tide around 9:00am. The main reason for going was to re-stock my bait freezer with mackerel. What a morning I had.

The mackerel were commiting suicide on the beach - each cast bringing in another 4. I gave up with a cooler box full (over 100 fish). A good supply of bait for the next month or so.

On top of these I had a Channel Whiting to 2 lb on rag tipped with squid, 2 dogfish, 2 smooth hounds and 3 tope, (oh, and a really big hermit crab - haha).

Don\'t forget, if anyone is coming down this way in the future, give me a shout, and if I can be of any help i would be glad to assist.

    Kev

Kev, you are not going to waste all those mackerel for fishing bait are you. Get the buggas in the pan. And see if you can send a few up this way.

Well well, it seems it\'s only me not willing to congratulate you Kev. As Anglers we\'re the first to complain about overfishing, low fish stocks etc. etc. but we\'re more than happy to post about how many we\'ve caught.
They don\'t mature until they are 2-3 years old and it\'s reckoned it takes around 7 years for a mackerel to reach 1lb in weight. You gave up with a cooler box full \"over 100 fish\", either you\'ve got one hellova cooler box or there\'s a lot of small fish in there.
                      Pleased you enjoyed yourself

Yes, this may seem as if I have taken too many fish.

Please bear in mind 2 things. The box of ¾lb mackarel that I took will be utilised forthe remainder of the season as bait. They were not caught for being caught sake, and secondly, overfishing on the south coast is casued by the local boat fleet selling their licences to the Spanish. They come within 500 meters of the shore and dredge everything up, purely to make fishmeal.

A few anglers taking enough \"school stock\" pails into significance compared to the boats.
