  • Salt

Dose anyone know where I can get a supply of salt.
I am talking about 25kg bags of the stuff.
During the summer, all the mackie I catch go into salt boxes. This consists of large wood boxes, a layer of salt, a layer of mackie and so on untill the box is full. Then the lid is nailed shut. This works better than freezing for me. I have found the mackie stay firm and can be taken out when needed in a hurry. No having to wait for it to thaw out. the trouble is my usual supply has gone abroad and i need to find another. I know someone on here should be able to help.
As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everyone is impossible,
but P*****g everyone off is a piece of cake.

I know the Scandinavians preserve it that way then eat it.

Thanks lads. I knew you lot would have the answer.
Been keeping mackie this way for years now and always found it better than frozen, and like i said before its much better when you decide to go fishing on the spur of the moment. You dont have to wait for it to thaw out.
£6.25 for 25kilos that runs a bit expensive when your using about 150kilos per box and sometimes i have 5 boxes on the go.

Fishing in Northern Ireland a couple of years ago we got packets of salted mackerel instead of frozen. Still caught fish but only small ones. Not sure if fresh or frozen would have made a difference as limited experience of the bait. They swore up there that it\'s as good.
