I think that Laksmi Mittal and Roman Abramovich are wealthier than Westminster, who according to the Sunday Times is worth about 8 billion. Northumberland is a relative pauper at 300 million. Sounds a lot, but I suspect most of it is art, furniture and assests which he cannot sell. We can cuss him for wanting more money but hey, who wouldn\'t like to have a few more quid?
I frequently attend meetings in Belgravia and I can tell you the wealth there is staggering. I recall a few weeks ago seeing and Aston, a Ferrari and a Porsche in a line on meters in Belgrave square.

Local feeling is that Port of Tyne \'debated\' anglers use of the Pier following \"That Accident\" when 2 lads were badly hurt climbing over the barriers/gates one evening for an illicit fishing session. It is considered that anglers \'illegally\' fishing at night then leaving all their rubbish to be cleared up by the attendants each morning is the problem.

It is a condition of use of the pier by angling clubs that no rubbish or mess is left behing after matches. The \'right\' to fish the pier with the permission of Port of Tyne is a privilege that must not be abused. As far as I am aware, all clubs with permission to fish conduct themselves properly and Port of Tyne can have no compalints.

However - as usual it - seems it is the irresponsible and thoughtless minority trespassing and leaving their trash who are risking the loss of another fishing venue.

i remember the incident it was the one with the disabled lad and his brother,have they both made a full recovery and learnt there lessons fish/fishing is not worth a life/or serious injury no matter how big the fish is.
again a health and safety issue and irresponsible anglers spoiling it for everyone else.

and please dont go on about having a go at the disabled/special needs people as i have a son myself with special needs who i wouldnt put in that situation for any fish/fishing no matter how good the venue

Got to say that I have been following this thread with interest.

I used to fish here on a night time after the pier was closed back about 1980. I even bought an Abu Atlantic 154 11\'6 rod especially for fishing on the end of the pier as a 12\' rod was too long for casting off the end.

What really baffles me, is why the authorities don\'t have a purge on the pier for a few weeks and prosecute EVERY person that is found to be fishing on it.

It is obvious from the posts on NESA that it is the people that are fishing illegally that are leaving their rubbish behind. The clubs that have permission to fish are going to be stopped by a few mindless idiots that can not be bothered to clean up after themselves. Why don\'t you all get together and sort it out.

Send letters and e mails to the port of Tyne and get them to have it checked out on a regular basis. tell them to prosecute the offending people and it will stop.

I can quite imagine that there will be a few members that will not be happy about this post but if you are not leaving rubbish behind and you are telling the people that are to take it home, then this is not aimed at you. After a few weeks of visits when the littering has stopped you will be quite free to climb around the railings and fish till you drop.

Troutman - I don\'t think anyone on this Board would have a go at any disabled angler. NESA will always support and encourage ANYONE wanting to fish and being given an opportunity to participate and enjoy the sport. There is no place for discrimination here.

Willyweteg (Brian?- we have met) - I hear what you say and agree your sentiments BUT I do believe there is an \'element\' within Port of Tyne waiting on any excuse to ban fishing from Tynemouth pier. A;; anglers following this thread - please discourage illicit fishing - we may lose the venue!

Hedley I also understand what you are saying mate but you can\'t protect the people that are ruining your fishing.

One day it has got to be stopped, if it is not then your fishing will be.

At the end of the day it does not affect me but it does affect you and quite a few other members. Why wait untill they stop you fishing there. Do something while you can mate. That element within the port of Tyne will have to do something if you all get together and request it.

If they don\'t they could be made to look quite stupid

Hedley, do you know the clubs (aside from your own) who have permission to stage comps from Tynemouth pier?

If so, why not contact them and see if you can get a joint committe together. Why not be pro-active over this issue and approach the PTA with suggestions on how the clubs and the Port could work together to put an end to illicit fishing from the pier. Far better that the clubs are seen to be wanting to work alongside the PTA on this, rather than just sit back and wait for THEM to decide the issue, themselves.

I\'ve spoken to Brian in the past regarding similar problems on the South pier. Although the pier at South Shields is open to the public for fishing, similar issues regarding discarded litter exist (probably more so). He\'s a very approachable bloke and I\'m sure he\'d be happy to hear that the angling clubs with angling rights for the North pier are just as concerned as the PTA about both the illicit fishing and the related litter issues.

Good points Tony & Brian.

As far as I am aware there are at least 4 clubs who have permission to fish the Pier at agreed dates - Tynemouth; Longbenton; Newbiggin Hall and Byker & Ouseburn ( I am a member of Tynemouth and Secretary of Longbenton). I will have a word with Billy Brown (Longbenton Chairman) and Dave Hayley (Tynemouth SAC membership secretary) and see if we can get all 4 clubs together to discuss \'the issue\' and the/any way forard with PoT.
