Casting Help Needed

Having started fishing about six months ago, I am the proud owner of a greys apollo 14\' rod, and started with a fixed spool Odessa Reel, having got used to casting with that I moved on to a Shakespeare Mulitplier only a small thing but it does,

However this is the bit i need help and advice with, when I really go for it when I\'m casting no matter what or how I try I end up nesting before the weight hits the water, I have tried letting the brakes off altogether winding them on, pretty much everything I know of. ( which isn\'t alot ),

Help would be gratefully received.

there could be any number of probs mate, one that springs to mind if its still nesting when its tightened rite up is that some reels come with no centrifugal blocks in the reel, although you do need them there in a little plastic bag and you put them in the reel yourself as required. could be that.

It would help if you posted the reel model number so we can see if the reel has any braking system

Hi the reel does have a braking system and the nylon blocks are in place, winding the the brake on or off makes no difference. Any other ideas

might not be the reel, but casting style. i f you snatch it a bit too fiercley whe releasing it will cause any reel to over-run

I\'ve got a little shakepsepare neptune 300, took the brake blocks out, everything slackened right back and with a 2oz lead or 60g spinner on a carp rod can nearly empty the spool. however, stick on a bigger rod with 5oz and its a different matter, have to release smoothly to stop the thing getting carried away

Got to agree with mark on this 1,if you are snatching at the cast this would cause a nest in my opinion

Yeah snatching may be the problem, I do tend to try to hard in my casting, but it is to get the distance is there a technique which uses less physical effort but is smoother?

I always found, until someone pointed it to me to put more power into the \'punch\' - your right pressing the rod forward, than the pull - t\'other hand pulling, once I managed to get the two a bit more balanced found I could hoy it further and nest less

my problems start after a week of chucking 6 oz of lead around, picking up a fly rod which weighs 2oz and trying to be delicate!

would life be made easier if i used a smaller weight to get used to casting.?

worked for me! only one way to find out I suppose, stick 3 or 4 oz to start and see how it goes

if your reel is nesting within the first second or so of your cast its your technique, if its happening in the middle of the cast then its the reel and it needs more braking.

Some good advice for you there. A couple of small points to add that might help you. Don\'t overfill your spool with line and certainly don\'t use too heavy a breaking strain on a small multiplier.
Start off your cast nice and slow and gradually add power rather than trying to hit the horizon. You need to develop a nice smooth style before you start adding power. You\'ve had at least one good offer from willywetegg, I would take him up on that.
