I remember about 10 maybe 12 years ago reading an article in sea angler, i think it was written by north east angler tony taylor, all about keeping it simple.
So i started to keep mine simple, no unnecessary swivels, beads, splitrings, sequins, saved a fortune, ! and a load of time. The most expensive bit on my traces was the hooks, which of course you need and i dont mind forking out more money for the better quality ones.
Anyway i\'ve had a bit of time on my hands lately, so i\'ve been making a load of traces, and guess what they\'re full of all the latest in rig making technology, cascade swivels, genie clips, impact shields, even the dreded sequins.
Made a couple of plaice traces, they\'re so bright you have to wear sunglasses to look at them.
It took me about 40 minutes to make a simple 2 hook, 1 up 1 down rig. 40 BLOODY MINUTES, and i dare\'nt even try to calculate how much it cost.
Now you can imagine how upset i\'m gonna be when i chuck this super duper fish catching rig into a load of kelp, and rocks and i get snagged. Better take my diving gear with me and swim out and get it.
The popular fishing magazines are full of adverts for all sorts of junk to hang on the end of your line.
And if you look at the packaging they all have neat little diagrams on the back, showing you how to make the rig (you\'ve probably been making for the last 20 years) more complicated, therefore more attractive to the fish.
It wont be long till there\'s an open university course on trace making.
Anyway my point being, is it realy necessary for the type of fishing we do in the north east.
The only recent inovation i can think of is the rotten bottom, which can be very useful.
About 90% of my fishing is done over rough snaggy ground, where a long cast is not usualy required.
Anyway what type of trace do you lot use ? for rock fishing over heavy ground ....nice clean sandy beaches ..... boat casting .... downtiding. And do you realy think adding colourful beads or sequins makes a difference to your catch rate. ?
Do you realy think it\'s necessary to clip your baits down if you\'re only going to lob it 40 yards into the kelp ?
I know a lot of the old timers use only 1, or maybe two combinations of trace.
Are you an old timer, if so what did you use 40-50 years ago, before it was deemed necessary to decorate your end tackle like a christmas tree.
