Anywhere you find big groups of old tyres at low tide. Always loads in there.

All crabs moult. The most commonly used for bait are shore crabs as they are the most abundant. People are protective of their tyres, usually because a lot of effort goes in to setting them and cleaning them out etc. There are other ways of finding peeler crabs though (they will seek shelter anywhere they can, not just in peoples tyres). Try turning rocks in a local estuary when the crab moult is underway. To test if the crab you find are peelers, twist off the end of their second hind leg. If there is a new soft brown leg underneath then it is a peeler. If there is no new leg and just a white sinew then the crab is not moulting and is no good for bait. You will come across crabs that are nearly out of their shells or have just shed their shell, these are also good for bait. Hope this helps, if not heres a link that describes in detail the stages of crabs peeling and how to keep them. Good luck

have a chat with adam at the weekend. he'll tell you all about crab. [he might even give you a couple]

i wouldnt bother going through the tyres though, you could end in a lot of bother. its too early to get them locally.
