Theres loads of Multiplier rod and reel deals around in the sea angler if you have a look.

I rang Glasgow angling centre the other day about there Penn PPT Tournament pendulum which was a giveaway at £40 but they didnt have none left and were\"nt expecting any, they told me about a Penn 12ft Powergraph surf rod and a 525gs for £99 which didnt seem too bad, if you look around Penn are doing loads of these type of deals at the moment.
But if your fishing heavy ground have a look at the 13,6ft Ron Thompson Axellerator, my uncles just got one for xmas and ive had a bit of a swish about in his garden with it. feels very stiff and according to whats getting said on here and in the angling mail there supposed to be well up to the job, my uncle paid £99 for his and it came with a penn reel winch on it for free.

Depends whether you\'re fishing heavier or cleaner ground as to what to buy. Might be a good idea to get something in the middle and if so I would go for a reel like a Daiwa SL20 or Penn 525. (can always get a spare spool so can have a choice of breaking strain line).

As for rods there\'s much more of a choice. I would try and get hold of a better quality second hand rod to save some money. Some budget rods will not be so good although there are some better ones about now, for instance the Axcellerator is supposed to be good but haven\'t seen it.

Personally I would go for a second hand medium to heavy ground rod like a Conoflex Nemesis Plus. They will pull through the weed but also they aren\'t super stiff poles when fishing beaches and rivers. Theyv\'e got the new version out now so you might pick up a good one for a decent price.

TC i\'m located in Wallsend will more than likely going to ID fishing to kit myself out.I was quite interested in the sea anglers article about the new Abu\'s maybe the Esprit which i think is reasonably priced that gives me around £80.00 to get myself a reel. This is where advice would come in as i\'m planning to have the new rod and reel for some years the only reason i\'m kitting myself out is my bonus from work so i had better do some research.
          Cheers guys

Charlie Ive just bought a greys apollo mk2 which I know got a bit of stick off the lads but when your pulling in a lumpa or normally a tree trunk of kelp it handled it no bother .As for a reel all I use are abu 7000 \'s years old and totally reliable.A very user friendly reel especially if your used to fixed spool leave the level wind on Ive still got mine on yet. Charlie,
I haven\'t tried the Esprit, but I recently bought one of the new Abu Suveran SX rods featured in the previous months Sea Angler. I have kitted it out with a Penn 525 Mag.
I am really pleased with the rod and the Grip Lok reel seat is excellent (allowing you to easily tune the position of the reel to suit your casting style). It also gives you a bit of confidence in your choice that Alan Yates is prepared to put his name to them.
The price quoted in the article is £119.99 this is the MRR price but you can pick them up for about £90 (including P&P). This would give you a bit more to spend on your reel - the 525 Mag is a very popular choice at £99 and I certainly can\'t fault mine.

As far as the level wind goes - you would be suprised how easy you can get used to feeding the line on to the spool with your thumb. Like you, I have recently moved from fixed spool to multiplier and feeding the line on seems second nature to me. As I see it, the main reason for not having level-wind, is that the level-wind bar gets in the way of you gripping the reel tightly with your thumb when you are casting. If you intend power casting 6 oz. or more of lead then you will certainly appreciate getting a good grip on the reel

Some good advice here. Definitely go for something that is a little bit stiffer than you would normally think about \'cos you can grow with the rod. You will want to chuck away a floppy stick as soon as you can - believe me, I know. A second hand Century Tip Tornado Sport or Kompressor Sport would be a great choice.

If you\'re going to ID on Chillingham Road CharlieFarley, see big John. Tell him you\'re fairly new to the game, you\'ll get sound advice and he won\'t try to flog you the most expensive rod in the shop (unless thats what you\'re after). He\'s also usually got some good 2nd hand rods in. Been a customer for years, can\'t fault the plaice.

Agree with what\'s just been said. John at ID seems to have a load of second hand gear at the minute but some of it will be crap but he gets some good stuff. Seen some quality second hand stuff before xmas but no spare cash. If you tell him what you\'re after I\'m sure he will look out for some for you.
