    South Shields Pier.

Me and our old fella have a bit of time off this friday and seen as the sea\"s not planned to get away I think were going to have a dabble on south shields pier.

Having never fished it before I was wondering where the best marks are, what type of ground i\"ll be fishing over, how far to cast etc.

All help would be much appreciated.

By the way If anyone else is out on friday and sees a lad with a Blue Titan Smock on , a ridiculous goatee beard and even worse hairstyle come up and say hello, that\"ll be me!

    Thanks.

        Marky,
I was fishing the pier last Friday afternoon / evening and there were a good few coalies being caught in front of the 1st gate (fishing into the harbour).

Ollie, The main carpark at the pier is closed during the Winter months(from Oct.31st). However, there is a smaller car park right next to the main one, which is open all year and from Oct 31st, there\'s no parking charges, \'til the Spring. It\'s situated right alongside DUNES Amusement Arcade (there\'s also a new bowling alley, just recentl,y opened there.).
The small car park DOES get busy on a night-time with people using the bowling alley, but if you get there early enough, parking shouldn\'t be a problem.
If it is full, there\'s another car park beside the Wouldhave Memorial (the blue & white lifeboat, just accross the road.)
I know (as far as security is concerned) that the car park beside the bowling alley is covered bt CCTV and is well lit. Not sure if the one beside the lifeboat has CCTV, but it is also well lit (and free from 31st Oct. \'til the Spring)

            Hope this helps, Ollie.....

Thanks very much for that info lads. I\'m going to drive up from Bradford to fish the pier Saturday. Last time I was there (November) I parked in Dunes car park no bother. I fished down to low water at a mark with number 13 painted on. Had some good whiting.
Couldn\'t get a good kebab and chips when I\'d finished though!!

On the run-up to (and during) the Christmas period, there were some reports of really good catches from the pier, Ollie (never seemed to happen when I was there, though....lol). Since then, it seems to have tailed off a bit as far as codling go, but these W and SW winds haven\'t helped matters. There\'s still whiting and coalies been taken, but again, this can be hit & miss aswell. As has previuosly been said, no 2 tides are the same, and you never know, you may just hit lucky (or NOT, in my case...lol)

thanks tony, seems your not the only one who turns up when everyone says ,you should have been here last night !!! lol
this weather at the moment is not doin us any favors at all down here on the n/yorks coast, they seem all to be offshore with these winds .i fished with a friend last week and i think there must have been over 70 anglers ,and all there was caught was a few small codling and whiting ,just hope the northerlys come soon

Well i fished there today got on about 11am and fished it till about 5.30pm. Went on the end and getting bites straight away anyway Hit one and went to swing in a good size whitie when the thing dropped off and returned back to the sea (i\"d have put it back anyway.) The Lad next to me had a whitie that a seal had taken a chunk out of it looked a corker judging by the head on it but thats all that was on.

Anyway our Kid got a nice size whitie and then our old fella remembered \"he left the rest of the bait in the car!\" so me and our kid went back down cos our kids lighter had packed in anyway and once we get down puffing and panting \"we\"ll have a pint now anyway\" so went in the pub over the road and had a sharp one with full titan smocks on and waterproof bottoms and our kid got a lighter, got the bait out the car and on way back up a lad on the wheel i think it was called seaward side had a 7lb + Cod seen it with my own eyes cracking fish he said he lost a better one when it took him in the rocks at the side of the pier.
Anyway get back to the rods still no fish for our old fella or any of the 3 rods so had a walk down to the first gate and our Kid had a Rockling. No more bites and that was the end of that.

Decent day, good laugh I can see the potential In south Shields Pier but it didnt help with them blustery westerlys today.

glad you enjoyed your day on the pier
The pier is a mile in length, so you also had a canny 4 mile walk aswell

The lad with the 7lber sounds like he was fishing the area around \"the blocks\" - see the ariel photo I posted on another thread about fishing Shields pier. It\'s a popular spot to fish and now you know why
