  • To laugh or cry, lead ban consultation

Don't you just love the EU

Today - EU consultation launched on LEAD in consumer products

A consultation under the REACH Regulation was launched today. It seeks to restrict or ban lead in consumer products - including fishing tackle - in all EU countries.

    Restrictions under consideration - ECHA
    --------

    Restriction - ECHA

    "Restriction
Restrictions limit or ban the manufacture, placing on the market or use of certain substances that pose an unacceptable risk to human health and the environment. A Member State, or ECHA on request of the European Commission, can propose restrictions."

The way the price keeps increasing we'll have to find an alternative soon anyway.
    Cheers, Keith.

marco1967 you are probably not wrong on large weights just had this reply from Mike Heylin from the European Anglers Alliance.

                  Probably less damaging to angling than we might fear. The Swedes, or at least a small group of Swedish scientists, have a bee in their bonnet over lead and children. The introductory paragraph to this document outlines the basic position;
"The objective of this report has been to develop a proposal for the restriction under REACH
Annex XVII of lead and its compounds in articles, which can be placed in the mouth by
children, and which are made available for consumers or intended for consumer use. The
report comprises the justifications – in terms of risk assessment, practical workability and
socioeconomic impact – for such a restriction."

Previously the EU has found no reason to ban lead from fishing tackles, the latest decision taken in 2012.

The definition outlined above means it won't be looking at large weights or heavy lines, most lures, feeders and other items of tackle too large to fit a child's mouth, but we need to keep an eye on this regardless.

                  Mike

Well, if it ever happens, it'll be back to sparking plugs or a few links of chain.
