  • prawns galore

just a thought like lads but as you know i do alot of boat fishing as well as shore fishing and when we have been out on the boat the last few weeks we are getting cod stuffed full of prawns and the local inshore trawlers have reported to us that the prawns are in in masses at the moment,
i believe the results from the shore of late and the low catches are as a direct result of this and the fish are not having to venture as close to shore to feed and take the risks in doing so,
so boys dont beat yourselves up about not catching much in my opinion its just that the mother nature has decided to give them a break but she will ultimatly give us the break back when the prawns sod off and those fish come inshore to feed again and alot heavier bigger and fitter after there meal on the prawns, like i say its just a thought and might be total crap but you never know

p.s. prawns as bait from the shore might be worth a go ive read in a magazine that farmed asian prawns are cheap and a good alternative to peeler crab but i cant say ive had much luck on them in the past from the shore
    cheers lads tight lines

I was once fishing at West Bay and the bloke next to me caught the only fish of the night. On leaving I asked what he caught it on, and it was a fresh tiger prawn from Sainsburys. I didn\'t believe him, so he showed me the packet they came in. With nothing to loose I bought some for the next session and back down to St Marys. Had one to 2.5lbs from Latch Dyke and another about 1.5lbs from West Bay. Worms and Crab Baits didn\'t catch.

So I wouldn\'t rule them out as an alternative bait.....even more so if there is evidence that fish are feeding on them...

i found a languistine type prawn whilst digging last week it was still alive so i put it in me bucket when i got back to the car it had gone. was it a dream i wonder, it was a nite tide. ive used them myself and caught whities and saw someone last year catch a big cod with them. if your bait is in the rite place at the rite time i think they will take anything.

its funny you should say that i had a 4lber the other night but on the west coast and it spat up a very fresh prawn about 4inch long.so i whipped it onto my other bait and cast back out, only to have a birdy and it splattered the prawn to bits.never used them myself but the couple of other fish we had were full of them as well.

I often have a pkt of raw Tiger Prawns in my bait bucket - can\'t say that I\'ve had a great deal of success using them, though.

Been ages since I was out fishing and even longer since I\'ve caught anything to speak of - but the fish I have had this Winter have all had a belly crammed full of prawns.

Trying them tomorrow on the Holderness coast. Apparently working very well for good whiting.

It would be nice to think that the masses of prawn are keeping the cod offshore in deeper water.Personally i think the reason is excessive trawling and inshore netting.

used to use prawn in the winter when peeler crab was unavailable for fishing for flounders in the river wear, absolutely dynamite bait for them. never tried tiger prawns just the normal ones you get from the fish quay. just used to peel the tails (easier said than done when they\'re raw) and tie them on size two limericks with elastic thread.
the flounders are no longer caught in the numbers that they were 15 to 20 years ago but back then had many sessions with 20+ flounders all caught on fresh prawn. never really tried them for other species but see no reason why they wont work.
