  • Farmed Sea Bass

Can anyone put my mind at ease?

I\'ve just been into a very large supermarket which I won\'t name as of yet, and on the fish counter they had about a dozen \'farmed sea bass\' on ice, all of which were about 12\" to 14\" in size.

I asked the gadgey if the size limit was any different to that of wild bass, to which he looked straight over my shoulder and continued \'can I help you love?\'

I know the limit for wild is 16\" be it on boat or shore, but is there any way this store is selling the fish legally?
My concern was raised more so when he blatently ignored me, and I didn\'t persue him anymore as my p!ss was now at boiling point!

    Cheers.

The same store I suspect that locally to us has, on occasions, had what were in my opnion smouthhounds labelled as lesser spotted dogfish for sale and what were again, in my opinion, very dried and wrinkly small tope.

As far as I am aware, farmed bass don\'t have size limits.

Aye, been told they could also be farmed in a country with smaller limits, just the bloke was way too suspiscious for my liking. I\'ll ask him again next week, and find out where they\'re from.

the farmed bass will be imported from turkey or maybe greece, and as they are farmed there are no limits to size,

overpriced and over here. taste like **** comapred to fresh wild bass. It will probably have been dead in a box for several days before it hits the supermarket.

tesco and morrisons, get there\'s from turkey or greece usually

if you think thats bad try going to a supermarket in france...asked a fishmonger in one last year for a kilo of dover sole...I got 8 fish, do the maths!

Some people are like slinkies - not really good for anything but bring a smile to your face when thrown down the stairs

Converting an MFV Fifie trawler type thing.

Oh aye, we were in France two weeks ago, whiting barely a pound in weight for sale.
I think the farmed bass usually have a label stating the country of origin.
