    Stew,
Here\'s an ariel pic of Shields Pier - I\'ve marked on it the most popular spots.....

Looking at the tides for New Years Day....
    H/W 10:55 (4.2m)
    L/W 17:00 (2.1m)

You\'d be ok fishing any of the marks indicated on the photo.

If you want an easy time of it (no snags) then fishing into the harbour anywhere between the Brigade Hut (yellow wooden building, just out of the photo) and the 1st gate is fine. Had some decent sized fish from along there. It\'s also a good spot if the sea\'s away and you can\'t hold bottom on the seaward side of the pier, or if the waves are coming over the pier wall further up.
If the sea\'s ok, then the Rail End is a good shot (fishing the seaward side).
I wouldn\'t recommend fishing the Harbour side from beyoned the 1st gate, as it is VERY snaggy and you\'d need a good, long cast to get into cleaner ground.
The Post is another good shot (again, on the seaward side, for the reasons I\'ve mentioned).
Marks 44 and 45 are very popular and are well worth a bash if you can get on them.
Fishing from the very end of the pier can be rewarding (take a look at Jason Haws 20lb 14oz cod in the \"bigger cod\" thread), but can also be very snaggy.
Generally, I\'ve heard that it\'s best to keep on the move whilst fishing the pier (following the tide in / out) i.e. if you arive at H/W, then start and the shore end of the pier and work your way up the pier as the tide goes out. Or if you get there at L/W, start at the end and work your way back down as the tide comes in.

Hope this has helped you, Stew.

Thought I was being a bit vague, actually, Marc (lol....wouldn\'t be the 1st time!!)

I think the white line you\'re referring to must ba a mark on th photo, m8 - unless it\'s you speeding towards a Scandanavian Ferry :P

I had to really over-do the brightness on my screen to see it though (I can\'t see it at all on my usual settings)

Yeah Tony but we`ve \"Peaked\" with Max hrs darkness now , so were on the way up... get those pirks ready and the hooks sharpened. But remember , due to your affliction with pirks we need to know the exact weight of them for deduction after weigh in.

LOL heres looking forward to a good season ahead, I hope the shore lads are having a good season, hows it fishing right now?

Me & my son, Ian got down on the pier about 10:30-ish, Stew and fished the Rail End (see the photo), \'til about 2:30-ish.
We then moved down to just in front of the gate (shore side) and fished the harbour.
Very rarely are the gates gates open, Stew. The Summer is the only time the Port of Tyne seem to have them open during the day.
The term \"storm gates\" and the phrase \"will be closed during periods of bad weather\" seem a bit nonsensicle as far as Shields Pier goes. Even during periods of flat calm, you\'ll find the gates locked during the day
