  • Mullet @ Port Carlisle

Looking ahead to the spring/summer. Has anyone fished for the large mullet (3-5lbs) in the solway firth? I\'ve watched them cruising around the margins & old harbour while flounder fishing and seen the haaf nets trap a few fish but has anyone fished for them with rod & line?

scott , i had a walk down 2 year ago to have a look at low water . i seen what i thought were small fry hence the thoughts of a breeding spot but on closer inspection they were tiny shrimp and millions of them . i assume (knowing nothing about mullet) they were feeding on these.
also when i was looking about the mark not 1 fish broke the surface telling me they arent daft and maybe very shy.
i think it would be difficult to catch 1 of these but id give it a crack. its gotta be better than flatties all day!

Have a look down the left hand side of the page and click on original site then click on Portpatrick.

Some good tips in there off a certain Alan Charlton on catching the elusive Mullet.

with the light gear you need it is great fun, as long as there is plenty of room to play the fish, any ropes and you can bet your bottom dollar they will head straight for them. had one do that at Portpatrick Harbour, i tightened the drag to stop it and it was going so hard it actually came clear out the water

I know theres lads from Kirkcudbright fish for them round their way. I\'ve seen a few while fishing Manxmans before, and there were a few hanging around the Isle of Whithorn last year.
