Head for the south coast in West Sussex around July time.
Smoothhound run will be in full swing. Double figure fish are not unusual and if they hit the beach in numbers a dozen fish between 7 and 17lb in a session is not uncommon. Selsey West beach is the "Mecca" but Pagham, Ferring, Goring by Sea to the east and Hayling, Browndown, Lee on Solent and Hill Head to the west will all produce as well.
Daytime you can have great fun hammering the Black Bream with fish to 3lb on Selsey East beach. Hot, calm nights give the chance of a Stingray on Pagham or, to the west Bronwich beach just west of Hill Head (good chance of hounds here as well to 10lb and if you are lucky Golden grey mullet and Gilthead Bream). Chance of a Bass on all these beaches, nothing massive but good fun.
Not the easiest fishing as you can be weeded off at times but when the Hounds hit it can be spectacular - picture 30 lads in a row and one after the other every rod goes bananas as a decent size smut hits the bait
Drive is not much further (about 40 miles) and probably a lot easier than travelling to Etive. Plenty of campsites or the caravan park at Selsey for accommodation.

this island of ours is vast and the fishing can be amazing. id be happy spending the next 20 years learning the english and scottish coast in travelling to ireland at some point. then ill venture accross the pond for halibut which in all honesty is the only thing that attracts me.
then the ultimate for me will be salmon fishing in canada!
