  • Plugging for Bass

This year I\'m going to have a good bash at trying to catch a decent bass on plugs.

Got a load of cracking bass plugs and a new Shimano travel spinning rod (20-50g) to team up with my trusty Shimano 4000. Also put together a list of very likely venues to throw up bigger bass than the regualr schoolies. Question is, what time of year do those of you that plug for bass start? I was thinking April onwards but is t worth starting earlier?

Usually North Yorkshire and occasionally the Holderness coast. Will also be heading to Anglesey a couple of times hopefully and maybe Cornwall.

Cheers poacher. I\'ve got a couple of yo-zuri mag poppers and my next purchase will be a Storm Chug Bug and a couple of bass bullets for windy weather.

ive often wondered how the south gare fishes for bass ollie, i fish the north side of the tees the soutern side is very similar i only went over there for the first time the other week for bait digging and it looks very fishy i use surface poppers when conditions allow though a mackarel spinner in the right spot will often catch more fish maybe because it casts much further. you cannot beat the feeling of being the only person there at 4am with the sun rising and the bass boiling on the surface chasing there breakfast. are there any mullet where u lads go

Mike got a static caravan at Clashwhannon caravan park,Drummore,Mull of Galloway. Have been fishing the area for years but tried to specialise for bass on poppers last year with some results. If you ever intend to fish over there giz a pm and I will put you onto some good bass marks.

Top bass popper is a Yozuri Aile Magnet. Not cheap at about £10 but you should not easily lose it if you fish with 15lb mono. You should see the teeth marks in mine

hi snatcher i camped in ardwell last august i didnt have any luck with the bass or the mullet for that matter seen a mullet that i thought was a tope it was huge but id left the mullet gear in the tent and with light fading didnt have time to get back there for a crack at it, i will this year tho. do u use the tackle shop in ardwell the blokes in there are very helpful and the ragworm is top notch

Give it your best shot MikeR.

I\'ve been into this style of fishing for the last 3 years and I can tell you it\'s well worth putting the time in.
I would suggest May onwards around this area and continue well into October, might even fish after that but Jeez your fingers get cold.
Best fish I had last year locally was around 5lb (returned safely, they all are when possible ) on light gear it doesn\'t half make your wishbone twitch.
Best times are around dawn and dusk. As already stated Poppers are a wonderful way to fish I use these more than anything but only because my favoured marks are shallow with loads of rock and weed. Fishing a deeper mark a diving plug would certainly be more suitable but like any other fishing experimentation is the way to go.
Be prepared for lots of blank sessions if fishing locally BUT the first time you see the popper attacked on the surface you\'ll forget all about the blanks.

                          Best of luck

Tell me about it. When the surface just erupts on your lure. Pass the toilet paper

My main aim this year is to get my good lady to get a bass on a popper. Wish me well
