My favourite rig is a pulley pennel, but thats cos i spend most of my time fish rock edges. If I fish the rivers I will opt for a long up and over flow trace. If expecting flatties or whiting then it is a two hook rig clipped down.

My advice would be to carry a variety of rigs, as a change in rigs, may change your luck. No point fishing a long flowing trace that is getting washed all over the place, if the fish are feeding hard on the bottom.

I have all sorts in my rig wallet.
Pulley, pennals, two hook and three hook rigs of all sorts and hook sizes.
I have just started to use a pulley with a very short trace as i noticed with longer ones in a big tide they were always tangled,so a shorter one helps to keep the bait on the sea bed, down side is you very rarely get fish hooking them self, they must feel the pull,so you have to watch the tip like a hawk and strike quickly.
Main reason i have so many rigs is unlike some i pick a spot and stay there and just try differing baits, rigs and distances rather then moving from mark to mark.

you seem to get some very good bites on the pulley whereas the up and over they just tend to lie with the hooked swallow does anyone go along with this

yes u do get a cracking bite on the pully rig john,
but i find with the up & over rig with a long hook snood worm bait it looks natural on the sea bed & when the fish picks it up it just swallows it like u say, but when it moves away m8t 9 times out of 10 it is hooked. same with the pully rig m8t mosttimes they hook them selves.

for match fishing, 3 hook clipped down, blast it out, 3 dogs, works well up here.

yes john m8t, my up & overs allways release. up 2 now they have anyway lol. i just use a gemini bait clip on the top & a impacked bait shield on the bottom, so as soon as the impacked shield hits the water it springs the bait off & the pressure of the water as it sinks on the bait releases the snood off the top clip m8t, ive had no probs with it. there r a few ways 2 do it as u say m8t but this 1 works 4 me.
