  • Question about sea states

Sorry for the Newbie Question, but I\'m a bit puzzled about what constitutes good fishing weather.

I was led to believe that the best sea for cod was after a good northerly blow. Thats what my brother told me ages ago anyway.

now what i want to know is, is the best time to fish when the sea is heavy and the water is clouded, or after its settled down a bit?

everyone seems happy when there\'s a heavy sea on, but I\'m just not sure when is supposed to be the best time to fish.

    cheers in advance

Matty that is one hell of a question mate lol. I think it depends a lot on the mark. Some marks fish well during abig sea and some after.

It all depends on the wind also, some places will fish on a northerly but would be very dangerous during a southerly and vice versa.

      Jim.
Remember, some people are alive simply because it is illegal to shoot them.

if you asked this question 20 years ago i would have said during the big sea (if fishable) and for maybes 2 days after it flattens off.
now it seems that you need to fish during the big sea or just as it starts to die off a little. the reason for the change i\'m not certain but my hypothesis is that there are now many times the number of whitings in proportion to cod, these then move in as the sea settles and very quickly hoover up the food washed out by the waves, the very food that brings the cod within casting distance, once this food source is eaten there is no reason for the cod to stay close inshore. as i say just a theory, but i think quite logical.

I can see the sense in that comment Micky as there are millions of whiting up this way nowadays and they seem to stay the majority of the winter,I bet these ravenous little buggers could hoover up alot of bait in a tide.mind saying that I like to eat whitings, fantastic fresh on the bone....

As far as I can work out the conditions are always best on the day before I go fishing :P

Pressure high fish are nighe, pressure low the fish will show.

Micky\'s Quote \" i would have said during the big sea (if fishable) and for maybes 2 days after it flattens off.\" Absolutely spot on...
