I would just like to say to the skipper of the first trawler out of Whitby at 05.00hrs Monday morning YOU ARE AN AR@EHOLE AND I HOPE YOUR NEXT SHI@E IS A HEDGEHOG, why because you came that close to the west pier on your way out that even through we were tring to get our tackel back in you still managed to rip my mates rod from his hands and into the sea, we where late in seeing him because we where tring to selter from the westerly gale forse wind that suddenly blow up, but in my opinion just for a laugh you deliberately aimed for us knowing that you would take all our tackel as the next four boats that came out all kept to the centre of the two piers so all I can say is BAST@RD.

Were you fishing in between the piers, trying to reach the rough ground towards the east pier? Is there a sign saying some thing along the lines of fish the seeward side only?

chippy your right there is a sign saying that and also to fish of the bottom landing only however we where fishing straight out of the end just left of the bouy marker and like I said he come that close to the west pier I could see the colour of his eyes, we contiued fishing in the same spot and was not bothered by the other boats who came out after him.

Its also happened to me once or twice (not lost a rod yet but been snapped off).
Only the other week I WAS fishing towards the kelp in front of the east and heard this boat coming but could not see anything (looking towards the town for a boat coming out of the harbour not out to sea from where this boat came) next thing my rod was being pulled along the handrail, totally my own fault, but on some occations the boats do head straight for your line, I know that they have the right of passage so to speak but it would not kill them to keep slightly right and not to cut straight across the front of the west pier.
Sometimes I wonder if they are just doing it for spite. or am I just a bit paranoid.

Having nearly been killed by a sinker attached to line that got caught up in the boats arial mast and then sprung free and hurtled past my ear at 100 mile an hour I can say that the boats coming in and out the harbour pay little attantion to what is going on above on the pier. You probably arent even seen up there. The boats skippers are paying attention to what is going on in front of them and making sure they make a safe passage to a from the harbour. They simply arent expecting people to be ignoring the rulke that says 1. no fishing from the upper deck and 2. no fishing into the harbour side.

Please dont think im a killjoy as I have broken both of them rules, but the boats dont head for you on purpose. A word of advice, if you do get caught up with a boat, click the reel out of gear and bite your line, its a battle you cant win and if you hurt someone like someone nearly did me youll end up on a manslaughter charge.

What are you going on about \"THEY CANNOT SEE YOU\" what a load of tosh... I click my light on when i hear them coming out of the harbour or when i see them loading with ice. I have even tried showing the skipper where my line is with my light and pointing for them to go around a bit, but to be quiet honest some of the buggers go straight for your line (I think some of them think its funny).
As for getting hit by a sinker that was caught by the boats ariel , antenna or wateva the chances are very very slim unless the boat was doing about 80 knots.
I know that the entrance between the two extensions is not very wide but some vessels do cut straight across the end of the west (which is seaward, so you are allowed to cast in that direction, ok maybe not from the top but that is not the issue here).
You have to be on your guard from about 2 hours before high water if you want to fish the lefthand front of the west pier, because some of the trawler skippers just dont give a monkeys about us shore anglers.
And before i get slagged off!! this is only mine opinion based on my observations and experiences.

tala, that is the same on most piers mate. NOT all skippers or boat owners do it but quite a few do.

Amble pier one night a boat came right in as close as he could, and before anyone says anything about sticking to the deeper water up there it was high tide and ALL of the other boats stayed well away.

He was heard laughing as he took everyone\'s line and the guy next to me lost his rod.

What the skipper did not realise was, the person who lost his rod new him and where he moored up. Got a canny smack for it and I don\'t know how but the lad came back WITH his rod about quarter of an hour later, to a chorus of well done mate.

              Jim.

Ok Tala you dont have to take my advice. Sounds like your one of these guys who always knows best. I am not surprised you are one of the few who catches the boats as they pass in and out of the harbour. Strange how some people have never done it once and you have already done it several times. End of the day the rules say no fishing from the top deck and no fishing into the harbour, I suspect one day one of those boats owners you curse will get so sick of risking his cuctomers lives every time he uses the harbour mouth he will insist the local council do something about it. Then where will you fish ??? Down Port Mulgrave with the other 2000 townies?

                  Seasons Greetings to all
I think common sense prevails, they obviously know theres no fishing allowed from here so they can do as they please,if its as bad as yous say I\'d rather fish somewhere else
                  Cheers Alan...

I\'ve seen a charter boat coming into Whitby harbour deliberately steer off course to go through someones line. The skipper and those onboard were all having a good laugh at it till one of the guys mates put a cast straight on top of the cabin!

What advice was that then??? i did not read any advice, just a little bit of a pop at Mazza !! (and now townies,,tut tut)
Mazza, and MikeR by the way are other townies like myself who already fish at port dock and we are pretty regular visitors to the west pier extension, I cannot see y u would have a go a townies who travel to places like Mulgrave, Ive been fishing there all my life (i was brought up in Porret lane in Hinderwell, we used to have a boat down there \"LENA 2\" and my cousin still has one), so Im only half a townie maybe a villagy eh????
I never posted into this thread to have a go at anybody (not like some), I was trying to inform people of the genuine risk of loosing their gear to a wayward trawler, wink wink.
If you read the posts you will observe that we were talking about fishing from the end of the extension casting either left or straight out (either way when the tide is running your gear nearly always gets pulled round to the right). I admitted to my mistake of chucking right and not taking enough care and attention.
But you have read from 3 different anglers who fish the west pier and we have all had the same experience, we know that sometimes we cast and the lines cross the harbour mouth, but we do try our hardest to retreive our gear before the boats reach us, its the boat skippers that get a kick out of aiming for our lines that get our backs up (which does not mean all of them).
But obviously you know that they never do that eh?????
If you dissagree with anything that I have posted , dont be a gobsh!te, keep your sarcasm for pm\'s mate, a lot of people who use this site have seen all this kind of banter before and dont really approve, lets try and not get too personal.
If you want to have a go just pm me... its free after all....

By the way, the sign at the top of the steps does say you cannot cast into the harbour it also says no lines to cross the harbour mouth as sailing craft have right of passage (or summat like that). As for fishing from the top platform Yes scarborough borough council do frown on this during daylight hours esp during the holiday season, but during the winter at night even the harbour master turns a blind eye, in fact he came and had a word with me not long back to tell me he was shutting the storm gate and that i would be ok to carry on as long as i did not go down to the lower platform
                      :P
                      MERRY XMAS

ps.. Jim,, I really dont know what they get out of it (boat owners, skippers), it may be a bit of a giggle that last for about 2 mins, but some rods can cost hundreds and hundreds of pounds and there is a very big risk of them getting pulled into the drink.
Have a gd xmas mate and lets hope you get into some nice big fish soon..
