Had a bit of a sesh on Seaham Pier Friday night, with my partner in crime Trev, the ancient mariner-he's not old, just very cursed. We set up our usual FEZ (fish Exclusion Zone)a barren 400 metre radius to ensure no fish went anywhere near our baits, and we settled down to watch the tips remain motionless. At least that's normally what happens. Time approx 1800 hrs, still in daylight all set up, I had 3 rods out, 2 at 80-100 yards ish, the light one down the side of the wall. Trev had 2. All with rag, lug and mackerel. Within 5 minutes I had a very odd bite, 3 pulls then a slow drag- expecting my usual awful crab, I was over the moon to find a Dogfish of about 4 pounds fighting on the end; first one I'd ever caught. Don't know why they are so unpopular; shark family after all, with superb camouflage, black eyes and unusual sand paper like skin. 30 mins past, approaching darkness and Trev got exactly the same bite, to reveal another Dogfish. Things weirdly went quite once it got dark, then came a fairly large rockling, followed by what I believe to be a Pouting. These two were caught on the light rod, size 1 hooks on strips of macky with rag, about 2 metres out. All fish caught released carefully, to get bigger and caught again. Loads of bites otherwise, small stuff, stripped baits ie crabs etc. All in all a cracking night! Took some pics. BIG thanks to the lad who offered (and gave) us a couple of his freshly caught macky for bait. Same lad who I was having a bit crack with as we arrived at the pier the same time. Top lad
