What's the best cod bait this time of year would they favor a big lug cocktail or have a better chance on peeler or maybe somethin else? Every cod i had was tipped off with mackerel before the new year

I've tried every concoction u cud think up between rag, lug, runnydown, razor, muscle n squid no joy at all even went so far as to try limpet still nowt! May aswell start trying raw chicken or sumit cos I not guna catch a cod anyway

If the cod are there they will take most baits... Just my opinion

I dont think you can beat a big juicy mussle or lug bait

caught a few wrass on limpet, but thats about it for that bait, a mate of mine told me a mate of his used to boat fish a good few miles off the Tyne and caught them using white plastic coffee/ tea spoons, ??? apparently the reason for this is people on the ferry going to Denmark would have a "cuppa" and hoy the plastic spoons over the side and the Cod ate them ??? More Weird Baits,, I have loads of them, most dont work,

everyone has their favs but i'd say lug n mussel cocktail would be ya best bet. it's full of smelly juice n guts so seems to help them home in on it better. side by side at same range with a different bait like squid, razor or makky ive seen the lug n mussel outfish the other countless times; for cod anyway.

you cant catch whats not infront of you m8. 20 yrs ago you could catch cod for fun , but not no more , you just have to be there when they are , and then the baits of choice go noticed.

It's not your bait you want to change mate it's the marks you fish.
If your in the right spot a cod will take just about anything

I usually fish two rods. One has a big bait on for cod. It is usually a whole stuffed squid, I have tried stuffing it with mussel, lug, rag, whitebait, prawns & Mackerel, all to no avail as yet. I will keep persevering with it though.

I think if the cod are there, they will take it. Just got to find the elusive feckers....

                      I fish it on a 4/0 - 3/0 pennel rig.

The other rod I use for scratching around.

Yellows/razor prob my number one bait this time of year. However rag and bluey has worked quite well also. I take all the options I can and let the cod decide.
If you are not catching it might be due to a poor rig or venue rather than just bait.
