John,I would personally leave the reel as it is with the level-wind engaged and drop a brake-block out and lightly oil the bearings.
you will gain very little in distance terms by removing just the level wind gear.

If you want to convert the 7000 to non level wind then you need to do a proper job to it.....by
chop out the top bar and plug.
remove the level wind completely and install a after market replacement bar to keep the frame strength and stop frame twisting out of shape.
By doing a proper conversion it will give you the advantage of being able to wrap your thumb over the spool to stop slippage.
The 7000 is a fine reel and will get you well into cod feeding distance without converting to ct but if you want a bit extra distance then do a proper conversion.

would it be worth it with a abu 7 ,fair enough with a top of the range reel,i have used my 7000c since the early eighties with the level wind and cog removed only using the orig bar with no trouble

just put the bar and grommet back, take out cog, and its the same reel without the travel part what levels your line

as long as you take cog out of side plate and take the the bit off that goes back and forth laying line on spool and put the the bars back on the right way with the screw bar back, the reel will work fine

i used to have a fair few 7ooos and never ever had a problem if the conversionis done this way, and have done a few for friendd nds they never had problem either

but got admit i did keep 1 0f the 7s with the level wind on

Can a not just take cog off and cap the holes where the level wind used to be?

because it holds the bar in place
