Cod are all one specie. A tommy is a cod that is under the legal size limit of 35cm. A codling is a cod upto 7lb i.e if it is 6lb 12oz its a codling if it is 7lb 1oz then its a cod. A poor cod is a cross breed of the cod and a pouting and is a different specie so would count in your specie hunt the record is only 11oz. A Pout/pouting is a different species also but has many localised names north of the Tyne tends to be a scotch haddock or scotchie, travel to Seaham and they are called Blegs. Hope this helps you out mate.

The colours differ between cod because of its surroundings the longer it feeds in one place the more it changes colour to it will blend in, the longer a fish feeds in the kelp beds they get darker and turn red to match the surroundings, even after being caught they'll still start to change colour put a dark or red fish in a white carrier bag and it'll soon start to get lighter in colour

              Poor cod From Wikipedia

The poor cod, Trisopterus minutus, is a temperate marine fish belonging to the cod family (Gadidae). It is red brown in color and has a pronounced chin barbel. It may grow up to a length of 40cm. It is usually found in small shoals at depths between 10 and 300 meters on muddy or sandy bottoms. Its distribution spans the eastern Atlantic; from Norwegian coasts to Portugal and along the Atlantic coast of Morocco; also in the Mediterranean. Spawning takes place towards the end of winter.

It feeds on crustaceans and small fishes. They are eaten by seals, whales and dolphins. It is commercially harvested for the production of fish meal, and in southern Europe as food.
