hi lads i was fishing the beach on a match sat night & first few chucks i was hauling in heaps of kelp & heard a grinding then a pop, handle just spun & i said 2 a m8 it felt like shaft had snapped.
any way i got home & stripped it all down & the main Drive shaft had snapped under the big cog where it is fastened down with the 2 screws, now the whole shaft can b taken out but what i want 2 know is can u just get a spare drive shaft on its own? if so where & cost ect would b great cheers

The shaft is their one weak spot - the bit which locates in the bearing is so thin, which seems crazy given the rest of the reel's robust design. I had five of the newer SHA versions (the ones with the free-floating gold spools) and if anything they're even worse, despite being stainless steel & even more expensive. Here's one I had to replace recently:



You can see just how thin the bit on the end of the shaft is where it has bent. On the SHA's it doesn't sit in a bearing but a bush, which is prone to wearing and giving the shaft a bit of play which leads to it bending. So when it happens on these reels, you need to replace the bush as well (as I've found out to my cost before!)

To be honest, I've pretty much lost cofidence in them - I sold off three that were kept as back-ups and held onto the two that have had the most use, but they don't get many outings any more since I switched to the Saltists when they came out - they're in a different league to the Sloshes with a much, much thicker shaft, just what they should have fitted to the Slosh. When I got them they were the same price as the SHA's but have since risen steadily in price & now that they've discontinued the silver ones they've hiked the price a bit more to paint them black & gold.

Remember not to lose the very small shim/ washer that sits in the middle of the bearing under the securing plate with the 2 screws, it is best to replace it, it's pence, it basically stops end float on the main shaft that you are going to replace £14.99 from Daiwa plus postage .

cheers 4 all the reply's lads i'll get it sorted, my slosh 20 is around 10yrs old m8 & never had a prob with it & i use it on rough ground aswell clarky m8, as gary says it it very thin b4 it goes in2 the bearing as seen in the pick. 4got 2 say clarky m8 the ball of kelp i hauled up the beach was like a seal lol & i also use braid, no stretch in line so all pressure on the shaft & spool m8.
