My laddie has caught the bug and is wanting a rod for off the beach and the river. I dont want to spend a lot in case he changes his mind and i wont be taking him off the rocks just the beaches and river marks.
Any good choices for him both new and 2nd hand. Rod length to be no more than 12ft.

Cheers.
Have a look for an old conoflex cobra, an old zzippy 2500 or Daiwa PKB. These were great short rods in their day and will be spot on for the beach or river.
Should be able to pick any of those up for 50-80 notes
Not many people can bend a rt axe, try a zensorflex if your wanting real cheap and fishable, i fish with sonic sk3 14ft 5-7 and great rod for price, to strong for your young un, but the shorter rods in there range are top tools.
If its got t1ts or tyres, its gonna be trouble.
If you can't fix it with a hammer, you have an electrical problem
my advice is stay away from soniks you want something light to get him interested something that when a whity is on looks and feels like moby dick i would buy him something that casts 5oz max that way its a nice soft rod plenty of bite detection keep your eyes open for a flattie/bass rod i have a conoflex frenzy ideal rod but not many second hand ones about but dont go past 6oz casting weights as the tips start to stiffen and lose bite detection and i remember growin up started with a light rod loved the bending when winding in over the years the fish get bigger but the rods bends less lol
i like it ,your right im 6foot had one, verry good cheapish rod but no good for a yough lad.possibly a nesa member could help them out and rig him up FOC.tight lines. haway he,s just starting up. tight lines
