what\'s the crack with this stuff,Iv\'e tried it a few times with little to show ,heard that some lads warm it up in the microwave and it fishes much better! I prefer nice fresh worm but this is supposed to be belter for flatties/whiting which I like for the pot .has the nesa peeps used this to good effect?or should I stick to worm/maccy cocktails?
    cheers

I never used to have any faith in it till one night there was a mistake made with my bait and they gave me runnydown instead. I got two fish with it that night one of 6 lb and the other 4 1/4 lb in consecutive casts.
I always have some in the freezer now and although I prefer fresh lug it sometimes does the job better.

Runnydown, is in my opinion whether fresh or frozen one of the best baits out there. I always use it in cocktail form along with standard lug, ie. Lug/runnydown/crab....Lug/runnydown/mussell....Lug/runnydown/squid. I personally would not fish without it.....A guy in our club Alnwick SAC digs over on the West Coast for runnydown. this year he got all his worms for the season in 5 hours. That is all he will use for bait apart from a wee bit of squid sometimes...He fishes the same sort of area, come hell or high water every week and nearly always has at least one fish and is usually in the top 3 every year.
Just let it defrost naturally and tie on the hook with bait elastic.

Got to agree with Rory (red5).

I always have some in my freezer, and use it every session.

        Top bait up here !!

Cheers lads I will fish with it a little bit more and see what happens,I guess I\'m just a tight arse really as I don\'t like buying bait unless I have to...collecting my own bait is enjoyable for me and I have the time so that\'s no problem.
Faith in a bait is a massive thing it makes you fish better, well concentrate more and with the runny I just thought this stuff doesn\'t work,I\'ve only used it a handful of times tho. Then my mind wandered to thinking that it may work better on different marks-just like some of the local lads would\'nt fish bottom of the cliffs newbiggin without clam and there\'s some places I just use whole razor and do ok
I\'ll persist tho,and let you know how I come on.thanks

As has been said, runny is an excellent bait for the North East winter fishing. As far as having confidence in a bait goes, a big cocktail of runny, squid & mussel looks just the job.......and it often is.

Dunno how the others put their cocktails together, but this is a quick sketch of how I bait mine up using a pennel.......

I use a very similar set Tony, but instead of small bits of squid, I cut long thin strips, and attatch one strip to both top and bottom hook of a pennel rig, joining the two hooks together, as it were.

If crabs are a problem, the squid strip can be tied around the runny with bait elastic.

If I can\'t get fresh lug, I normally get some rag and mussel, bait up as normal, then hook a couple of runnidown through the head of the top pennel and wrap the whole lot with elastic thread.

quick question re lug ,do they need gutting before you freeze them (not sure if guttings the word) ive been told they just go to mush when defrosted
                    cheers Bri

do you try and remove the gut but leave the juice davy,or do you sort of,dry them out before salting/freezing? is it only big blacks that can be done this way?
                        cheers

Only ever use the bigg`ns that are slimey and covered in a mucus type stuff - the shops (well reelsport used to) generally like you to take a bucket in for them ,so they are in sea water ,they burst their heads otherwise and all the juices that you need at the bottom of the sea are wasted- any left that i know wont be used i just nick behind the head with a razor and \"run them out \" ,then dab off with kitchen paper and salt them in lines of ten wrapped in cling film.Really good bait ,and you can grab them at a moments notice out the freezer with a few packs of mussel/squid.

RGF, I do exactly the same as BriH. Prefer them live if I can get them, but its useful to have a load froxzen down.
