Not sure now after the second pic - the body looks ok for eelpout but the head not sure. I don't think it's a blenny either the body shape looks wrong. Can't tell if it has any spots very well from the pics but if so it could be a butterfish (see pic below). They can grow to 25cm. How big was it? Could you pick it up ok or was it very slippery?
Butterfish

I don't know I'm pretty stumped too.
Eelpout don't have a "v" in the fin ? ......
(from wikipedia Viviparous eelpout - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
Here is the eelpout I caught in last years species hunt. The head looks bigger.
Aqua- holic it's up to you mate. What do you think it is ?

Looking at your pic I think it's an eelpout. I don't think it was a butterfish because it didn't have the spots like the one in your pic, caught it at middle docks in the Tyne was just over 20cm and a bit slimy.List of South Shields Pier Fishing Marks http://youtu.be/l-R3XPf0S0Q

OK Eelpout it is then. Catching it at Middle Docks sounds right, last year about this time I had three eelpout from Brighams area which is right next door and they usually show up when theres lots of fresh water and floaters in the river. I've only ever heard of butterfish being caught on the pier. Table updated. Well done mate.
