Drop Net's

If i read one more catch report with someone saying they fished a rock ledge or pier or jetty and lost a big fish on the lift am going to scream....USE A DROP NET £10 from most tackle shops, nowt to carry and easy to use.

It is so frustrating knowing people have lost the fish of a lifetime or a PB because they took the bets bait, best reel and rod and are a super caster but when it comes to landing a fish had none of the right gear.

Moan over...just hate reading about people loosing a good fish at the feet, it happened to me once when i slipped on some steps and know how it feels.

i cant see how a net would work mate a pier wall is roughly 8-12 ft from the top of high tide then you would have to leave your rod and hang over the pier to land it?? Or a cliff anything from 20ft to 200 ft wouldnt work best bet is 60lb hook lenghts 80lb rig body and a strong hook and keep tension on the fish a net is only good for on the boat people loose there big fisg by not using strong enough line i have not had a monster but had doubles only lost one and it was by letting the line slacken a touch and off it went

I have used drops nets no problem with me on my own or better still having someone to guide the fish in the net, the cliffs should only be tempted if the edge is well footed and rock, but to be honest anyone fishing cliffs with the way they are sliding into the sea at the moment with the rain must be mental anyway.

Just hate reading reports of line snapped, hooked pulled fish fell off etc etc etc Roker and shields pier very easy to use drop nets done it and seen many others do it, as i say best get two people as makes life easier when guiding fish into the net and you can keep tension on your line better but if you have no area to lift a big fish i say you have less chance of loosing one lifting than messing on with a drop net for a min or two

They use them with no bother at all on the Dover piers, and others. I've thought about it countless times and never got round to getting one.

Have you ever tried to handball a double figure fish up a wall? My mate handballed a 10 pounder up the dock wall and it hurt like hell, no matter what line strength you use. Anything over 7lb goes for a swim to the nearest steps for me.

i always try to lift my fish first on piers and low level lifts if my rod cant lift 5 to 7lb fish i have the wrong rod lol

My drop net cost £10 and came with 40ft of soft rope, i added 4 2oz leads to the 4 corners of the net so that when it is lowered in the water and the waves hit it the net still stays open and hangs below, this also helps keep the net vertical on the lower down rather than swing around if its windy.

When i get a chance i will take a pic of my set up and i have a pic of my mate using my net pulling up a 9lb congor at the Mull

Thats why i put the post on about the grabber which slides down the line.
I cannot understand why anglers fish cliffs because its almost impossible to pull a lunker up the sides.

Yeah spot on mate, usually when I think Ive got enough to carry on the pier and leave it, you get a good fish on.lol Bought a square one for twenty pound off the net and used it ok on the piers. My mate brian used his to get a twelve in the same night you got yours i think. Bit tricky on your own and no good on a lot of cliffs where you havn't got a straight drop but for me a lot better bet than handballing an 8ib + fish. Even with the best/strong gear you need a perfect hook hold to get the big uns up.

Your right! I met Brian on my way off and showed him my fish and told him to get his @rse on the drum.
I diddnt have a net that night and walked the fish to the steps. a long way to walk a fish I tell ya! The bloody thing got its second and third breath on the way, diving back down!

I have had a 8lber up shields peir on a sonic sk4 5-7oz... no issues... the reel didnt take it, i just locked the rod between my legs and pulled my leader through the eyes.

a drop net with the set up like richies will work off piers or cliffs, when i caught my 11lber off the wherry my mate had to hand ball it up and i was hoping to fk that my hook didnt straighten or the snood snap, i would have been very happy to have had the use of a drop net that day.
