  • blyth beach Sun 23 Dec - planning from afar

    Hi guys,
I'm planning my yearly xmas trip up to stay with family in Beddlington (currently sat at my desk in London, dreaming of fishing and the drive North on Friday night)

Time is at a premium for the next two weeks, because aparently xmas means spending time with family???

But I have a window for the early evening/night of Sunday 23rd to start with...

Soo.. my brother in law and I are considering Blyth beach (near the bandstand) fishing the last couple of hours of the ebb, and the flood (until we can't take anymore), I've never had much success of that beach, but hear good things. It would be great to land a few codling

we're not experienced beach anglers, but have fished piers etc. for a few years.

I will be using squid/lug/mussels in whatever shape/size/mix seems to work.

Does anyone have any thoughts/recommendations to mitigate our chances of a washout

I see current forecasts are SE winds, picking up on sunday which might challenge our plan!

We have fished the harbour wall at Blyth several times with reasonable success, but nowt big (whiting & occasional baby codling), always plenty of action though, and it's well sheltered, so this will be our goto if the weather gets too bad.

    Many thanks in advance.

the sea's are forecast to get to upto 16ft m8 over next few days so good chance most beaches may be weeded out, blyth has been bad recently with weed cant get past it

      North East!

      Hi Swaffs,

I'm also doing 'that drive' on Friday night and can't wait!

Moved down here 18 months ago now, and always love coming back home to the North East! I will be trying my hardest to get out for at least one session while i'm up. Hopefully there will be a few fish around too!

I normally park in the big car park by the toilet block n walk down to the right n fish over low water.
If there's loads of weed it'll be a nightmare mate gota be 30mph winds on thurs too.
        Hope this helps

Thanks for the comments, clearly I'm going to have to wait and see how it's looking nearer the time, weather/weed wise.
If it is bad, can anyone recommend somewhere worth a try over low that might be sheltered somewhat? Just trying to maximize my evening's fishing.. haven't been out for months!

Probably the Tyne as long as there's not to much rain water

              Hi mate,

I live in bedlington and fish blyth peir regularly, last sunday morning I fished 2 up, 4 down and got a few coalies, whiting and plenty of crabs haha! bait used was mackerel, rag and muscle. A word of caution though, I've just seen a post about a few of the wooden planks missing on the walkway. so might we worth giving it a miss if you havent been before. If you're taking beach casters try the beach to the left of the pipe about 300m south of the pier, had some canny bags from there!

Thanks matey, I've fished the pier many times in the summer (float fishing for mackerel etc) only fished once with a 3 rig flapper in winter, had a nice 1.5lb whiting a baby cod, and crab central! size wise we regularly catch the same from blyth harbour, but without the crabs and wind, although I guess the chances of something bigger will never come from the harbour. I expect it to be blowing like crazy on the pier .
I've seen a few people tie up windbreaks to the railings.
We've got 11&13 ft rods so options are flexible

At the moment, 10-15am, the sea is big and coming in from the south east with light rain. Sundays forecast is for westerly winds which should help flatten it off quite a bit, so low water being around 6ish, just a matter of checking the beach out for the best holes and watching for weed. Drive safe and good luck.
