alot of people on here claiming to cast over 170 yds with bait on? Either i am hopless or people need to get a new measuring tape 170 yds with bait on is a long long way and some claim to do it with so called big baits over head thumping i dont think its possible to be honest fishing or full pendulem maybe but my thought just wish people would relise that 150 plus yards with a bait is a long way saw gary blanchard on horden yesterday and he was hittin abnormal distances lol

Blanchy is one of the best casters in the country mate. Very good on the heavier leads!! There are more and more good casters out there but it takes practice as well as the right technique, not to mention tackle.
A visit to a casting tournament would open a lot of guys eyes to what is achieveable. A lot of people think its just a case of smash it, look at Gary Pye's cast, its not what it seems! Actually a pendulum of sorts but effective at putting a good bait out a long way.
You can easily learn the wrong way so best advice is to get some proper lessons and then practice practice practice.

I know a number of casters who can put a bait 200 yds never mind 170yds, that's with no wind or a tailwind, into a head or crosswind, you can easily knock 30 yds off. The problem is a lot of people think they can cast further than they can and have never had a proper measure. Once you start getting towards 180-200yds with a bait on your using probably twice the power of a guy casting 140-150 yds. A bit like cars. most 100 hp cars will do 100mph, you need a 500hp car to get anywhere near 200mph.

Years ago when i was in my teens a bloke called peter thain took uneac members for casting practice and was a great experience. Then i was casting with a fixed spool as to now a multi . From what i remenber he was belting it out big distances

170 yds is a looooong way to put a bait. Not impossible but average jo with an overhead thump will probs hit half that distance.
As a comparisson an average football pitch is around 100yds from goalpost to goalpost.

170 yards is a long way with a bait ,i had a few casts with barney simpson , over grass with my fishing rod and reel grip wires and rubber worm , 189 yards swinging it that was not with the aid of knocking magnets off during the cast,it was a few year back, tried otg with a good wind behind me and managed a couple over 150 yards with the same out fit and rig , so it is possible if you put the practice in

Your right mate a lot of people think they cast a lot further than they actually do distance is hard to judge even more so into the sea where you have no markers

Gary2010 can chuck it like! If he put a couple clemmy on a gained abit more strength he could fish Norweigen Fyords from end of SSP!!! That's the trouble though, pullin fish in from so far!!! As for Hoying big baits 170 yards, well I'm a big strong lad and I can only get them 169.5 yds!!! Ill get there though!!!
GET OUT THERE AND STICK A BAIT IN IT !!!

Lol I know exactly what you mean, I went down to the casting comps at kirkleatham 2 summers ago, great crack n canny lads,
you think your casting way further than you actually are.
Gary Blanchard is a top lad and always willing to give advice,
When you see the likes of Gary and Jay Lee cast 270yds it's just unreal.
As for fishn there's not that many out there that puts lead n bait 170yds plus but loads that think they do

I'm lucky to put a biat 100 yards and I have cast around 180 with a plain lead and probably then only once. It's not often you need to put a bait anywhere near that but I've seen better. I've seen loads of people who only put their baits out a short lob - about 80 or 90 yards!!
Put back what you don't need.

They'd probably collapse if they seen how far 170 yards is, id hazard a guess if you measured most of there casts they wouldnt even be hitting it with a plain lead

I'd hazard a guess after measuring one of my casts out that when i add a big bait i'd be lucky to be getting it 110/20 yards never mind 170

it is obviously down to the condition on the day , casting in to the wind is a different game and your distance will drop big time , but if you put the work in 170 yards plus is doable in the right conditions
