  • Whitley Bay Evening Open result

Here we go with the full result: A slightly disappointing turnout, especially given the conditions, but some good bags and fish were taken from Whitley, Blyth, Seaton Sluice, Cresswell and especially Bog Hall. A lot of people also caught one or two fish but hearing on the grapevine that there were a few fish about chose not to come back to the weigh-in, so the actual catch rate was probably a good bit higher than the result indicates. Well done to all who managed to find a few fish & thanks to those who turned out.

96 anglers fished tonight, 25 weighing in as follows:

    1st Phil Skinner - 4 fish 14lb 3oz including HF 9lb 6oz (Bog Hall) won £500
    2nd Peter Wilson - 6 fish 12lb 12oz won £200
    3rd Paul Sample - 5 fish 12lb 12oz won £150
    4th Gary Wilson - 4 fish 12lb 6oz won £50
    5th Thomas Davidson - 7 fish 11lb 7oz won £50
    6th Tony Anderson - 7 fish 11lb 4oz won £50
    7th Tony Stamford - 3 fish 11lb 2oz won £50
    8th Micky Bell - 6 fish 10lb 9oz won £50
    9th Chris Stringer - 6 fish 10lb 4oz won £50
    10th Colin Bell - 5 fish 10lb 3oz
    11th Si Davidson - 5 fish 9lb
    12th A Dunn - 2 fish 8lb 8oz
    13th W Toster - 2 fish 6lb 8oz
    14th Callan Stevens - 1 fish 6lb 7oz
    15th Bob Gascoigne - 4 fish 6lb 3oz
    16th Ivan Stott - 2 fish 6lb 1oz
    17th Walter Yardley - 3 fish 5lb 7oz
    18th Don Nicholson - 3 fish 4lb 12oz
    19th Brian Welsh - 1 fish 4lb 9oz
    20th Ken West - 1 fish 4lb 2oz
    21st G Hall - 1 fish 3lb 9oz
    22nd Gary Little - 2 fish 3lb 3oz

    Cheers, Gary

Here's a picture of his fish, he was leading the HF for a while till Phil Skinner got back with both the heaviest bag & fish from Bog Hall.

Fished longsands and rock ends between the old bathing pool and king eddies. Weed weed and more weed. 5 mins after 8 out of 10 casts I had weed climbing back up the main line and jamming in the rod tip making retrieving a bloody nightmare!!.
Good job I've got lots of spare line and leads at home Because I lost a ton of lead and three reels full of line!!

Still we live and learn! Well done to those that caught.

Weed became an absolute nightmare for me too at Blyth; but I knew there were fish in front of me so persisted but was constantly getting snapped off and line was getting so badly damaged that I lost the fish that would have won me the match right at my feet when my line snapped At one point I lost my rod to the sea while trying to sort out my other trashed reel - got a good soaking trying to get it back from the surf but it was too far gone & I gave up. Luckily there was a mate next door to me who'd tried to help me, so I stopped for a while to bemoan my luck - suddenly after about 10 minutes the line must have snapped freeing the rod and allowing it to wash back up on the beach! If I'd been on my own I'd have been away & written it off as lost. Had time for three more chucks with the only reel I had left loaded with heavy line for the rocks but even that couldn't cope - three chucks and got snapped off every time! I lost every sinker I took with me that night & trashed all three reels but just relieved I wasn't down £600 or so for a rod & reel lol!

Cheers mate, and thanks for trying to snag it for me with your line - always nice to put a face to a name on here I've fished through weed before on that beach and usually it'll clear after a bit, but never had it as bad as it was last night!!
