  • Tackle Shop Outrages

I took a SLOSH20 in canny nick (apart from the fact that it wasn\'t working properly) to a local tackle shop. A mate of mine had said they\'d sort it out no bother. Left it with them and a couple of weeks later was told that it was fixed and that would be £40 thank you very much (LOAD OF BOLLOCKS). Went in and had words ....\"Oh we replaced all the old components with brass and that\" Walked out not knowing what to do. Left it too long / waited till I had £40 to spare and went back to get it. \"We\'ve sold it mate\" ......********s. I ran round the shop three times in a fit and stared the gadgy in the face. \"You are winding me up\" ( ) Oh no. Wish I could post the shops name.

Ell........I edited your post as naming the shop on here may well prejudice any future claim you might make against them.

    Hmmmmm......
Couple of things that mebbies should\'ve been done:

Get an estimate - I know it\'s often impossible to tell what needs doing until they take the thing apart, but once they had it in bits and seen what needed doing, they could\'ve rang you (if you\'d given them your number) and told you what needed doing, how much it would cost and ask if you wanted them to proceed.

What length of time had elapsed between you being told how much it was and then going to pay the £40?
Did you tell them that you would be back to pay for it when you had the money? or did you have no contact with the shop in between your 2 visits?

charlie, take some advice from the trading standards or citizens advice lot. have a feeling the tackle shop has broken the law somewhere along the line.

I was walking around a car boot sale when Swmbo noticed an Abu 9000 I asked about it and got it for £30:00. It wasn\'t quite right so I took it to Temples When Bill and Martin were there. They gave it a good service and it cost me about the same again.
I don\'t think you were going to be over charged for the work but for them to sell it without your permission sounds a bit naughty to me.
You are right not to publish there name on here but as Alan has said a few words with the CAB or trading standards might not go amiss Ian
If any of the NESA members were to ask you in PM I don\'t think it would hurt either to tell them who these people were mate. I would not like to think I was taking my gear to someone who was going to sell it.

            Jim.

The important factor is how long elapsed between the first visit and the second and also if the shop knew that you were coming back.

The shop can dispose of the goods after a \'reasonable\' period has elapsed and no contact has been made by the owner. This is were the law is extremely \'grey\' though as there is no legal definition of the word \'reasonable\'

However, if it went to court then the shop would have to prove that they had tried every avenue to contact the buyer and arrange for payment and collection.

If, however, the customer refuses to pay for the repairs then the shop is entitled to sell the reel but any money in excess of the cost of the repairs has to be handed over to the original owner.

I have actually got two reels now which have been ready for over a year!!!! The customers have been contacted and are always \'popping in next week\'.

sorry, but I\'d have to go along with name and shame in such a case, maybe waiting till after any claim you might make was resolved, but name and shame non the less.

If someone is clearly in the wrong, and you are merely stating facts of the matter, they deserve to loose business.

praise the good and shame the bad

If I knew where it was I for one wouldn\'t be setting foot in there

Even if you\'d left the reel there 6 months, it would of been courtesy if nowt else to let you know whats what

I agree with Mark, name and shame. How many times on this site have NESA members praised the likes of Veals, Gerry,s of Morecombe, etc for thier good sales and service, so why should,nt we name the bad ones as well.

Ell, can you pm me with the name of that shop.

                              Mark / Mike......

Not knowing the full circumstances - eg was any dialog maintained during the intervening period of the 2 visits?.... the time that had elapsed between the 2 visits......does the shop have any notice displayed regarding its\' policy on items not collected?.....etc,
It\'s in Ells\' own interests that the name of the shop is NOT posted on here (or elsewhere, regarding the same matter).
If the shop DOES have its\' policy on non-collected items displayed and it complied with that policy - the shop would be fully entitled to take legal action against Ell, NESA and me for any derogatory remarks made against it in this case.
