  • 16ft Rod advice

Well after toying with the idea for a while I am thinking of purchasing a sixteen foot rod to use for my beach fishing.

I have read a number of reviews on the net about different rods reels and setups but have decided the best option would be to ask people who fish the areas that I intend to fish with it.

So here goes lads, what are you using as in makes and models?

What are they like to live with and use?

What reels/lines are you using? it sounds like most are using big fixed spools with braid but sounds like a few may have multipliers.

any information/advice good or bad greatly received.

    Steve

I use a Penn Affinity, seems good to me but I am no expert like. Makes casting really easy.

conoflex anubis + 14ft , or conoflex oblivion 13 ft ,or greys apollo mk2 14 ft , with penn 525 slidey or slosh 20 . decent easy distance and pulling into the rough stuff is easy . if sandy ground i use an abu chrome rocket 6500 .

i once seen a greys triplex in action 16ft and it was a sloppy affair tbh .

If you are using light line with a fixedspool you can,t beat some of the Italian brands.
They have a lot better action and are a lot lighter than most other long rods.
Some top match anglers are using them with main line a light as 6lb on the beach.

I use a triplex 16ft had it from when they first came out. I use with a 525 supermag (reel down) with a narrow diameter 20lb line and shocker and 175g leads. it does cast a good distance but you have to change your casting style to be a little slower and more from the side than overhead, due to rod length. The 175 lead helps load the rod well. Only real downside is if your wading out to cast it's easy for the trace to hit water behind you and knack the cast up.To sum up I don't think I would go back to 12/13ft rods.

i to use the greys xxx,but mostly for beaches and bays at marsden.also use penn 850 f/s and have just upgraded to a penn 8000 surfblaster, kindly via dogrunner.again only use braid + 60ib shockleader.only real problem is as exspected fishing in windy conditions due to rod lenght, all in all the 2 or say 3 bits of gear work very well together-you with also notice you should easlier add say 30yards to your cast ps,use some kind of protection for your finger while casting out. hope this is of some help.tight lines.

Good advice, used my mates Triplex 15ft with 525 mag in Ireland a couple of years back and whacked it. Result 525 blew up in my face and definately couldn't be picked out. Got to lengthen your drop and slow the cast down letting the rod do the work.

I've got Daiwa Emcast 15ft which I mainly use with braid on fixed spool but sometimes with a multiplier. Only comes out a couple of times a year though when I fish pegged matches away. Good bite detection for smaller fish but does help distance

I use a sonik sk4 16ft 4-6oz, and it a dream. I love it for summer fishing blasting a couple of baits out. It has enough power too for decent fish too.

I can recommend the BB I use mine all over fs with braid and a shock leader absolute doddle to cast and decent distance even with an overhead thump has plenty of backbone and sits well in the stand for good bite detection even in a decent blow
